Das Buch hat mir durchaus viel Spaß gemacht, mir aber auch an einigen Stellen einiges abverlangt, weil ich die Figuren nicht wirklich mochte. Aber im Großen und Ganzen hat es mir gefallen.

Rose ist eine ziemlich starke Persönlichkeit, und auch wenn ich sie im zweiten Drittel des Buches unglaublich anstrengend fand, und ihre Art mich ziemlich sauer gemacht hat, wie sie alles bestimmen wollte, und ich auch ihre Einsicht danach nicht zwingend ausreichend fand (auch wenn sie trotzdem ziemlich gut war), so war es doch unterhaltsam, Rose zu begleiten und ihre schlagfertige Art zu sehen.

Wesentlich interessanter fand ich allerdings Lissa, weil sie vielseitiger war und da irgendwie mehr dahinter steckte, und um einiges sympathischer waren für mich viele Nebenfiguren. Bzw. größere Nebenfiguren. Dimitri ist einfach nur die ganze Zeit über goldig gewesen, und verdammt lieb, und auch wenn er eine sehr distanzierte Art hat, und Verantwortung bei ihm immer irgendwie an erster Stelle kommt, so wirkte er trotzdem nie gemein, oder unnötig gefühllos oder etwas in der Art, sondern man konnte ihm trotzdem anmerken, was ihm wichtig ist und was nicht.

Christian ist etwas schwieriger einzuschätzen, hauptsächlich weil er auf mich auch durch und durch so wirkte, als hätte er sein Herz am rechten Fleck und wäre eigentlich eine durch und durch gute Person, aber gleichzeitig wird er im Buch eher als „Badboy“ dargestellt, was ich gar nicht so richtig gesehen habe, weshalb ich ihn eventuell auch falsch gelesen habe? Aber auf jeden Fall fand ich auch seine Auftritte wirklich cool, und er war ein sehr beständiger Charakter.

Und Mason ist auch einfach toll. Ich fand die Freundschaft zwischen ihm und Rose sehr schön dargestellt, und während sie nicht einmal ansatzweise so tief geht, wie die von Rose und Lissa, fühlte es sich doch so an, als wären beide füreinander da und könnten sich aufeinander verlassen, und ich mag solche Figuren.

Lissa und Rose als Freunde sind trotzdem um einiges cooler, vermutlich auch weil ich zu selten Freundschaft zwischen weiblichen Figuren lese, die nicht in ständigem Zickenkrieg ausartet, und auch wenn Rose in dieser Freundschaft teilweise wirklich ziemlich heftige Grenzen überschreitet, und sie durchaus ab und an zu weit geht, ändert es nichts daran, dass man beim Lesen trotzdem das Gefühl hat, dass die beiden Mädchen sich wirklich viel bedeuten, und sie füreinander da sind, und die Darstellung da fand ich wirklich gut.

Teilweise hatte ich das Gefühl, dass einige Dinge zu schwarz und weiß waren, oder zu einfach, aber irgendwie steckten dann doch hinter allem ein wenig komplexere Zusammenhänge, und während man durchaus erahnen konnte, worauf Dinge hinaus laufen, hatte ich nicht das Gefühl, dass Plottwists zu offensichtlich waren. Es war eher eine gute Mischung aus „es kommt nicht aus dem Nichts und wird einem aber auch nicht auf die Nase gebunden“.

Und die Geschichte ist wirklich spannend. Es gibt die ganze Zeit über Fragen, die nicht geklärt werden, während man gleichzeitig aber auch viele Antworten bekommt, sodass es von der Geschichte her nie zu frustrierend wird, weil sich nichts auflöst, aber man gleichzeitig auch nicht wirklich das Gefühl hat, dass es langweilig wird. Es gibt immer dinge, die passieren, und mal wird sich mehr auf Figuren konzentriert, mal mehr auf die Handlungen, aber insgesamt bringt alles im Buch einem irgendwelchen neuen Erkenntnissen näher, und es fiel wirklich leicht, einfach immer weiter zu lesen, weil der Schreibstil sehr angenehm und einfach zu lesen ist.

Anfangs gibt es extrem viele Namen, sodass es leicht fällt, ein wenig durcheinander zu kommen, und teils verhält Rose sich in meinen Augen ziemlich daneben, sodass es durchaus Punkte gibt, die mir das Lesen erschwert haben (und es gibt es ein paar Kleinigkeiten in der Formulierung oder bestimmte Aspekte der Geschichte, die mir nicht gefallen haben, bzw. nach einer Weile eher auf die Nerven gegangen sind), aber insgesamt kam ich trotzdem super in die Geschichte rein, und auch super durch, und das Ende war sowohl zufriedenstellend, als auch sehr neugierig auf mehr machend. Es wird genug erklärt, dass man nicht das Gefühl hat, das Buch würde einen sitzen lassen, aber gleichzeitig bleibt auch genug offen, dass es doch interessant ist, zu erfahren, was genau alles als nächstes kommen wird.

Es ist in meinen Augen kein unglaublich grandioses Buch, und ich glaube, hätte ich es nicht gelesen, hätte ich auch nichts verpasst, aber ich bereue es auch überhaupt nicht, meine Zeit damit verbracht zu haben, und es ist ein ziemlich guter erster Band einer Reihe, würde ich behaupten. Ich bin auf jeden Fall am überlegen, ob ich die nächsten Bücher auch noch lesen will.

This was always my favorite vampire book series. Lots of original content, addressing classism, plenty of drama, and a ton of adventure. My only criticism is that there isn’t a ton of build up for either of the romances. I understand that a decent amount of time passed in the book and the author couldn’t write about every little interaction that made people fall in love but she could’ve spent a smidge more time on it. Other than that a great read with good plot twists! The narrator was good but she said Strigoi weird

I will admit, vampires are not my thing, so I was only gonna like this so much. It's not bad. I see why people like it. There's just too much angst and vampires for me. Also the love interest age gap is weird.

I remembered a few major moments from the first time I read it, but I enjoined it a lot and liked Christian a lot. I’m not sure about Rose, but I guess I’ll decide after reading the next book, I thought she was a bit annoying sometimes, but she’s just 17 I guess 🤷‍♀️

I’ve been wanting to read this series for years. When the books came out I was a teenager and I was scared by the fact that it was a 6 book series!

Well now 10 years later I can say WOW. I absolutely loved this. The found family aspect, the romance , the tension , the mystery!!!

I’m obsessed and I can’t wait to read the next one.

I first read Vampire Academy when I was fifteen, and wow was fifteen year old me powerful, because this is pretty bad and I thought about calling it quits a whole lot.
I’m going to put some of that down to the audio narrator who shouldn’t try for a Russian accent for any reason at all, but a lot of it is down to the writing.

The major issue I take with this book (and I felt the same fifteen years ago), is that the love interest is literally a paedophile. What was it about the 2000s that had YA authors writing about “older guy” love interests like their lives depended on it?

I hated Dimitri Belikov way back when, and I hate him even more now.
This is going to sound extremely bizarre, and perhaps it’s like when Michael Gary Scott imagined a unicorn before he’d ever seen one but hear me out: Before I even knew of the existence of Tommy Wiseau it was Tommy Wiseau who I pictured when I pictured Dimitri. To fifteen year old me that was how much older than seventeen a twenty-four year old looked. Also, how the hell did I do that?
Even after watching the terrible but bingeable TV adaptation where Dimitri is just some British guy who slipped into a sort of Russian accent about twice, I still see Tommy Wiseau when I picture Dimitri Belikov. Just wearing a leather duster coat and fewer belts.
Is it kind of iconic of me to read a book with a love interest who is kind of part vampire, who looks EXACTLY like TOMMY WISEAU, who I believe to be kind of part vampire—it explains a lot about him, just think on it for a minute—when I had never seen or heard of Tommy W? Incredibly. The accent is somewhere in the wheelhouse of what the audiobook performer went with, so why the hell not?
(But my sincerest apologies to Mr. Wiseau for picturing him when I envisioned a child predator in 2009. I know now that he’s just an “American guy” who is so super good at playing “American football” but is probably not a fan of garlic or holy water.

Anyway, this book is bad. Rose is pretty horrible. Dimitri is literally a paedophile. Etc etc etc. How the librarians at my catholic high school snuck this series onto the shelves I’ll never know, but I kind of wish they hadn’t 😬
