I love Dragon Age. I played all 3 games to completion and thoroughly enjoyed my time with each one (even Dragon Age 2). So it was only natural that I try some of the books set in this universe (written by David Gaider no less, the lead-writer for the games).
Honestly I did not know what to expect. I did some research and felt that most people liked Asunder best out of all the DA books so I went with it. It features Cole, one of the best characters from the games, along with two very minor characters from Inquisition.
The book is thoroughly entertaining from start to finish, great for lovers of the franchise with plenty of nods and background information for Inquisition. The plot is good and works well as a support for the action and ties in very well with Inquisition. I am repeating myself but you can really tell that the game and the book share the same writer and David really sets the stage brilliantly for everything that will happen (or rather has happened) in the game. I would consider it a fun, must-read for any fan of the franchise.

and also Wynne from Origins and ZOMG Shale who is my favorite character from all the games and she is brilliant and fun and very...well, very Shale.Spoiler

This was an OK read. The story takes place right after the mage rebellion in Kirkwall, but is set in Val Royeaux (Orlais). It's definitely no big work of literature, although it had some interesting plot points (the reversion of Tranquility, some new lore about demons and spirits, Wynne's past, etc.). Unfortunately, the main characters lack any serious characterization and reminded me of characters I met in DA:O and DA:II.
Honestly I feel like this sets up DA:I nicely. It's a very nice tale that just happens to be lacking in the character department. I didn't feel connected to any of the characters given nor invested in them. The closest one has to be Ser Evangeline de Brassard. That said, I enjoy the concept of the dynamic between the Chantry/Mages/Templars/Fade/Blood Magic/Etc but I struggle often with actually being interested in any storylines involving them and I had less of an issue with that here. The story captivated me quite quickly which makes the lack of compelling characters a bit disappointing. I'd rate this a 3.5 but I'm rounding up out of generosity because I did actually enjoy the read despite the flaw. One of my favorite characters from the games does make an appearance but it is nearly in an entirely cameo role. That character was done justice dialogue wise.
3.5 stars.
I enjoyed this one the most so far. Although cheesy at some points, I really enjoyed some of the characters. It was cool getting so much backstory on Cole and I’d really like to see Evangeline pop up in the games somewhere.

I'm probably biased because Cole is one of my top favorite characters in the Dragon Age franchise, but damn that was good!

Asunder was not my favorite at the get-go. I was excited to read it for multiple reasons: mages and COLE. I love Cole and I wanted to learn more about him. The first half of the book was boring, but I really liked how they tied everything together near the end. It wrapped up nicely and the character growth for Rhys was great.
I feel like this book really enlightens the Mage rebellion and shows depth into the factions(Loyalists, Aequatarians, and Liberalists) that you don't see in the games. It's a must read for that part as a Dragon age Fan.
All in all Gaider delivered some excellent lines and even some light humor in this dark time for the mages.
