I read this with my daughter when she had to read it as a required assignment. I remember being glad I read it with her at the time, but I don't recall much of the story. (Date entered 7/21)

I love the work of Arthur Miller and the emotion that he injects into his plays. But I struggled to connect in this one because it reads poorly but I am sure it is much better to watch on stage. The dialogue, however, was exceptional that perfectly captures the emptiness of a life dedicated to work and the futility of the American Dream. I could draw some clear parallels between this play and 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,' because of this.

I sense a real theme with Miller's work about the suffering of man and the women who only act as vessels to reflect the grief of the men in their lives. It is frustrating to see many of the women act perfect and supportive to highlight the fatal flaw of the male cast so they just come across as one-dimensional props or vehicles to extend the story. I felt that at least in the Crucible there were many women with depth but this play only had one names woman whose sole purpose was to be a wife and mother. So this play was a little harder to love but there is an undeniable talent to Miller as a playwright.

Was a bit confused in the very first ‘illusion’ part but oh it was so wonderful when I started becoming more familiar with what was going on. I definitely don’t read classics very often, so some language wasn’t super easy to understand, but most of it was pretty clear.

I did not like Willy as a character, but he was incredibly complex and seemed like a poor patriarchal figure with some unresolved trauma or inner conflict. Felt extremely bad for Linda. I’m not sure why I thought this book was about to turn into a horror after the introduction of ‘The Woman’.

3.5 rounded down, originally gave 4.5 rounded up but after sitting on it for a while, feel like i didn’t actually enjoy it that much. definitely liked it enough and had a perfectly nice time with it, but not enough for 4.5 in my opinion. plot twist kind of insane though

This ripped my heart out with its relatability and stepped on it. What is the American dream? It's a lie.
