Tangled Tides was a great mermaid book, and I thought it was way better than other mermaid books out there. I told the story of a girl finding out that most of her life was a lie and she has this destiny to send many people back to their homeland. First of all I loved the idea that she didn’t know what she was, yet the very first sentence in the book: “I needed to choose between the angel and the mermaid.” was such a great foreshadowing and symbolism for what was to come later in the book(pg.12). The whole plot line was great and I loved how the story turned out. This isn’t the one of the usual mermaid books where mermaids are vicious creatures that prey on humans. No, these mermaids try to stay away from humans and are just trying to get back home. Nothing about them are particularly vicious and unlikable. It’s kind of funny because in the book they call themselves “Monsters” but they do it in a way that it isn’t because they are grotesque.
Yara was a great character because she was so loving yet strong and resilient. It’s two characteristics that usually appear separate in characters. Yet the author managed to mash them together beautifully so she wasn’t either on or the other. Yara had a lot of characteristics that made her easy to like and it made it easy to get involved in her predicament. The only thing that got me was that at the beginning where Yara was learning to become a mermaid, she was really whiny and annoying. I also felt like there wasn’t and in depth look into her turmoil to excuse her whinnying. At that point in the book the emotions were really choppy and the writing felt rushed. Otherwise she was a great main character.
Treygan was a character that had a switching perspective of Yara. At the beginning he seemed to find her annoying and childish. He didn’t seem to want to deal with her and was really snippy with her. I almost got confused on whether he was a “good” guy or a “bad” guy. This was kind of confusing because at certain points in the book there were comments made that Treygan has always loved Yara, yet he didn’t seem to act like it. Sometimes what was said didn’t line up with how Treygan acted. Then as the book continued his attitude toward her softened and he grew to like her and pretty much fell in love with her.
Overall this book was pretty good and I really enjoyed reading it. If you’re the type of person that doesn’t like the evil mermaid stories than this is definitely a book for you.

I enjoyed the origin tales for the different sea monsters. Some of the characters were fun. But, the protagonist had so little depth to her...it was frustrating.
I got this book from the author, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side.
Firstly I would like to thank the author for giving me this opportunity of reading and reviewing this book.
Well, as you all know that this book has mixed reviews and to be honest my thoughts are in a mixed state as well. If you ask me how was this book on a overall point of view then I would say ‘Fantastic’ but I didn’t like the pace at all. The first half of the book was very slow moving and so it was pretty boring but after 2/3th of the first half the story picked up a good pace and the readers got to enjoy the story full time.
There is no doubt that this is the best Mermaid book that I have ever read. The concept is great and the mystery starts to grip you from the very first when the main lead Yara all of a sudden changes to a mermaid.
The action scenes are awesome and the ‘oh so passionate’ romance won my heart. According to my opinion the characters are great and developed and my personal favourite is Treygan, he is witty yet so caring!!! Rowan’s character seemed to be mysterious as well. The different fantasy characters that we got to read about in this story made it an intriguing read.
If you wanna enjoy a read that’s something different than the same old romance novels then I would suggest this book which will capture your heart in one go but be patient for the first half as all the surprises and twists are laced through the second half of this story. Enjoy reading folks!!!

I'll admit it, I've always had a thing for fantasy. I love getting lost in myths and legends and this is an exceptional example of everything I love. The world Hooper creates is beautiful and vibrant, the hours lost in it were not wasted. My only complaint is that some of my favorite characters, such as the wonderfully sassy Pango, are a bit one dimensional. I would have loved to see more, but most of these complaints are about background characters. It's well worth a read, especially of you're like me and love epic journeys and strong heroines.

It was nice little fantasy story with some unique twist in mythology.
Tangled Tides begins with a hurricane. Yara is boarding up her island home when a strange but attractive guy shows up wearing only shorts and asks her to trust him to take her somewhere safe during the storm. The guy, Treygan, knows who Yara is and as unlikely as it seems, Yara finds him vaguely familiar. Mesmerized, she goes with him…to the sea.
When she awakens underwater with fins and a tail, she is beyond freaked out and disbelieving of what is right in front of her. Not only has she been turned into a mermaid against her will, something that should be impossible, but she also learns that creatures like selkies, sirens, and gorgons exist…and they need Yara to unlock the gate to their realm.
At only a few pages into the novel, my first reaction was surprise that Yara would willingly go with a stranger despite his hotness, but I figured I was reading too much into it and chalked it up to fantastical powers.
In the beginning, my interest was piqued but I was slightly baffled. Mermaids and selkies? Sure. But sirens (Karen Hooper’s sirens were different than any I have read before but may be closer to mythological sirens than I thought) and gorgons? What was going on? But as Hooper simultaneously set the stage, provided background a little at a time, and moved the plot along, things became clearer and I was immersed in the world she created. I loved how Hooper mixed mythology with her own - it was really creature. The alternating view points between three of the characters - Yara, Treygan, and Rownan - really added to the story and kept the action moving.

I couldn't put this book down! The characters are dynamic, the heroine strong, and the plot line engaging. My favorite aspect of the book is the inclusion of conflict between multiple groups without painting any as evil. Fans of Tamora Pierce will enjoy Tangled Tides.
