This book has the bones of a great story, but a lot of it felt a little surface level. I wish there had been a deeper dive into the characters and their motivations.

This was such engaging YA Fantasy. It was actually written like YA but still a page turner for my middle age self. I loved the ghosts aspect because it helped explore the theme of grief around war and disease. In a way this is also historical fantasy as it deals with the horrors of the Black Plague too. There is also a lot of love in this book whether it's family or found love. Must read for young and old adults who like historical fic or fantasy or  a little ya/ new adult romance.

I enjoyed this book. It’s a linear plot and I read it quickly.  Not an overly complex plot but sometimes that’s just what you what. It has what I like in a YA fantasy, what I would consider a romp, good action with a couple twists and slow burn romance.

It’s somewhat gory so if that turns you off keep that in mind.

I really, really enjoyed this book. I appreciate the author's interest in history, and I personally enjoyed reading this despite the recent-ness of COVID.

The loss of half a star is from wanting there to be about 50 more pages tying up the ending. It felt very rushed and even some parts were left unexplained. <spoilers>I wanted to know so much more about him seeing the ghosts. Why him? Why not Jehan if she survived the plague? Why could Izaro see a ghost he couldn't? So many loose threads with that one specific plot line. Still a fantastic read, and I can't wait to dig into more by this author!
