I really loved so much of this book — the writing is beautiful and the characters are so vivid. It was a gift to get to read this story! I did feel like the story could switch tracks a bit abruptly (in terms of the characters’ plans, feelings, etc.) and one storyline in particular felt a bit cheap and overdone, but other than that, I thought this was a fantastic book.

I love when a super hyped book follows through on its promise and I understand why it's so popular. The Wedding People definitely falls into this category. In a lot of ways, this feels like a book written for me -- an adjunct instructor struggling to finish a book, belong, and be happy in academia. Add in a wonderfully messy scenario with the ex-husband and an unexpected wedding at our main character's final destination, and I could not put this down. I love the friendships our heroine makes, the journey she goes on, and the romance is pitch-perfect. I think the heavier themes of depression and suicide are handled with tenderness and just the right amount of humor, but I've always appreciated gallows humor, so. Again, this felt like it was written for me. My perfect contemporary novel.
