I absolutely adored this book. An emotional and enthralling tale of a giraffe road trip with some great insights into Great Depression era America.

Such a beautiful story!
A thrilling, inspiring, and emotional adventure from start to finish.
It was a slow start, especially since I was listening to the audiobook, and I did not like the narrator’s voice at first, but his voice just so happened to grow on me, and I found myself more and more excited to continue the story.

Eh.

I don't think I ever cared enough to give this my full attention. It reminded me of a unenthusiastic, less readable version [b:Water for Elephants|43641|Water for Elephants|Sara Gruen|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1494428973l/43641._SY75_.jpg|3441236] (instead of a circus, it's a zoo...Giraffes instead of elephants...a reporter in an abusive relationship versus an acrobat in an abusive relationship...You get the concept). I took this on my commute, and pretty much heavily skimmed most of it. I felt like I didn't need to go back and read more mindfully, and it never pulled me in. Other than the historical note at the end, I found this lackluster and meh.

I also never really connected with Woody, and his narrative voice sounded to me like if I was asked to mimic what a 17 year old during the Great Depression would sound like. If you like coming of age stories in this era and...animals, I guess? you might enjoy it more than I did.

1.5 stars because it didn't induce any all consuming rage inside of me (which is what I associate many of my one starred reviews).

Most boring book I've ever finished. Can't believe someone recommended this to me multiple times. The audiobook put me to sleep.
