A delightful adventure.
Coming of age, history, a cross country trip with giraffes - what wasn't to love?!

Not my typical cup of tea but still found it endearing: historical fiction primarily set in the Dust bowl era / 1940s. An old man recounts a meaningful adventure he had as a teen driving two giraffes cross-country while running from his past. Heartwarming, all the feels, and most importantly: the kind of book where you kind of worry the whole time the dog will die at the end but thankfully it doesn’t.

I love historical fiction and through the guise of a giraffe road trip we are taken back to the 1930s and are given a snapshot of that decade. Add in action, adventure and a bit of a love story and you get a great book.

This book is full of adventure and full of heart. It takes a true story — two giraffes who survive a hurricane crossing the Atlantic and then spend twelve days traveling from NY to the San Diego Zoo — and brings the reader on an incredible, at times harrowing ride. It’s about our relationship with animals, rooting for the underdog and how love and empathy win in the end. I loved this book!
