Before I discuss this book, I must relate a personal story that completely colored my enjoyment of this book (in a positive way). When I was a teen (or maybe early 20's) I had an extraordinary experience that until I read this book seemed almost impossible. Mary and I were at the Baltimore Zoo, looking at the giraffes. Remember this was maybe 50 years ago. I noticed that next to the high cage fence there was a hill that allowed us to climb up to the giraffes' head level. We climbed the hill, and to our amazement, a giraffe came over to nuzzle us. We petted and nuzzled back. Those big brown eyes, and such a gentle and loving, if enormous, creature!

That is why this book, which at its heart is a love affair between three humans and a pair of giraffes resonated so strongly with me. When the book's characters nuzzle with the giraffes, I never doubted what they felt since I had experienced it myself.

Plus, it's just a great story, based on a true incident. The giraffes' ship really did get caught in a hurricane, and the female was injured. The two were trucked across the country by the San Diego zoo's keeper and assistants. Not much is known about that trip, which gave the author a lot of license to invent adventures that described the U.S. in that time period. The vocabulary, situations and attitudes really made you feel you were back in 1938.

This turned out to be the perfect audio book for a road trip. The reader was amazing and the perfect voice for the narrator of the book. We listened at 1X and were never bored or strained to understand the work.

I expected to love this book but I barely liked it. It was the never ending drama that ruined it for me. About halfway in I was sick of the constant struggles being faced. I do think I just personally happen to have a particularly strong aversion to this specifically. I found it too over the top, thinking, "C'mon! Now what?!"

Captivating journey of two giraffes who survived an East coast hurricane while they were at sea to their new home at the San Diego Zoo. I liked the format of the old man writing the story down. The author used vivid imagery to describe each stop across the US, making you feel like you were in those different states. I personally could've done without the female character. I didn't feel like she added much to the story other than being a nuisance.
