Was for my book club but decided not to push further since I was not interested.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. This story captivated me. It is based on the real event of the first two African giraffes who were brought to the U.S., arrived in New York Harbor during a hurricane, and traveled across the country to the San Diego Zoo. Woody Nickel (Woodrow Wilson Nickel), a down-on-his-luck seventeen year old who came to New York after his entire family died during the Dust Bowl, is amazed when he sees the truck with the giraffes on it roll through town. He follows them, talks his way into a job driving them, and embarks on a journey that changes his life. It started slow for me, but I was hooked by the time they reached the Midwest on their journey. Highly recommend.

I couldn’t get into it. It was fine, but mundane and I just didn’t care about the main character’s journey. Finished it, but can’t say I should’ve.
Entertaining novel based on the true story of giraffes that were driven across the country. Good sense of time and place throughout and enjoyed learning more about giraffes.
This book took a while to grow on me but I quickly fell in love with the giraffes and the Old Man and Red!
