i desperately want more people to know about and read this book. it completely and utterly broke my heart. Wagamese's writing is so clear, poignant, and reverberates through every page to the point where you can't look away or stop reading or thinking about what you just read. Saul is taken from his family and home and placed in a school that seeks to strip him of his identity, name, and understanding of himself. he finds some respite when he discovers hockey and creates a new world for himself. however, he must reconcile with the injustices done to him and his family to move on. a devastating read but filled with hope and belief in a better world, i could not recommend this one more.
This book was amazing and also very emotional, As a young woman in Canada i feel as this book has really opened my eyes up to the history of our indigenous people and the hardship they have gone through. This book can be emotional draining but i truly do recommend it to people, it has given me a better understanding of my countries history (the stuff they won't teach in school).

This book is so beautifully crafted. Wagamese captures the magic of the love of sport and shows how it can heal us. Wagamese's description of Residential schools through Saul's eyes as a child is heartbreaking. This story is at once tragic and beautiful. A must read for all Canadians
A gut wrenching, emotional, beautiful story about healing
Amazingly powerful, Saul's journey is completely genuine and compelling. An important book.
And though I'm not really a hockey fan, many of those scenes are dazzling.
I'll be looking for more of Mr Wagamese's books.

Absolutely heart wrenching. It’s not an easy book to read but it’s important. The ending was beautiful and filled with hope.
