This is a book that everyone should read, especially Canadians. The topic of residential schools is a tough one but it is an incredibly necessary one, and the least we can do today is listen to the stories that came from them, to the children who were smothered by them. Wagamese did a phenomenal job at telling Indian Horse's story and showing through the revelation of certain memories years after the fact, how abuse can effect someone. Saul is a strong character, and he will never leave my mind. I will be thinking of his story forever.

This book was so heartbreaking, so infuriating and yet so full of hope.

Saul Indian Horse has hit rock bottom and as part of his recovery he revisits the story of his life - his time in a residential school (shame on you Canada), his love of hockey, his lost potential, the trials of being an Indian in a white world.
I really think this should be required reading for Canadians (especially those who yell to the tree tops about other cultures coming in to Canada and trying to change or get rid of our culture...oh the irony you will experience when you read this book).

The characters are so well written, the passages about the hockey games Saul plays are portrayed in a way that you can picture Saul's freedom when he takes to the ice.

FYI
This one was selected as the first pick in the Amnesty International Book Club 2015 which I joined this year. If you are interested in books that contain human rights issues you might want to check out the book club.

i knew as soon as i needed to put this down and catch my breath at one point that i loved this. UGH so good. please read this.

The prose was beautiful. The last 20 pages were amazing. Saul’s journey to
heal ❤️. Never been a big fan of any sports novels, but while sports is a main focus here, it’s also about the injustices and racism Saul (and countless other indigenous people) face, using hockey as its vehicle.
