This book was just okay. I am a lover of hockey, but I found that the book spent far too much time and description on hockey. Hockey being so important in Saul's life was probably the reason for this, but it made some parts of the book difficult to get through. I thought that Wagamese was wonderful with his words and descriptions of nature. I would have liked to have read more about his life at the school, life with the Kelly family, what happened at the Dawn Center, etc. Some of these seemingly important moments in Saul's life were brushed over too quickly, and left me wanting more and having unanswered questions.

EVERY CANADIAN SHOULD READ THIS BOOK.

This was the first book I read from my December list from Book Riot’s Tailored Book Recommendations, and it was great. Wonderful writing - lots of time spent describing hockey games, as the protagonist plays for part of the book. A little sad, a little heartbreaking, but a wonderful book.

Wow. Beautiful, moving, heartbreaking, truthful, unapologetic, redemptive, hopeful, powerful. I am struck by Richard Wagamese’s storytelling. This is a devastatingly important story that I believe everyone should read (especially those in North America- Canadians in particular).
Trigger warning: deals with difficult themes of violence, sexual, mental and emotional abuse, racism, suicide, alcoholism surrounding experiences in residential school and the years afterward.
It is difficult reading some parts because of these themes, but it is an important book for the messages it provides.
I will be thinking of this book for years to come and recommending it to anyone and everyone.
