A well written book that completely shatters your heart and sheds an important light to stories from indigenous people in Canada.
It’s hard to get through at times, keep tissues close by, but you are always rooting for Saul!
A book worth reading to widen your view of the not so distant past.

The story told by Wagamese is so important. More books should bring these stories into the light. The suffering endured by the children forced into residential schools, and the families who were broken by the theft of their children can not truly be understood. We need to read these stories again and again.
That being said, I didn't love the writing, which I'm separating from the story. Not every book has to be Infinite Jest, but I couldn't help thinking the story suffered because we spent so little time with some characters. It almost seemed like the author didn't fully understand his own character. It seems blasphemous to criticize a book so beloved, and so necessary.

A fascinating yet difficult story that deals with a dark spot in Canadian history. I have read a bit about the residential school system and it seems that even though the stories differ, the residential schools seem to have been everything from difficult to downright horrible. In this story we get to know more about what happens to an individual after he leaves the residential school system and how it takes him over more than a decade to get to grips with it. And probably much longer.

haunting and upsetting, beautifully written and impactful in its depictions of grief, alcoholism etc. wanna give saul a big hug
Wow, this book was both easy and hard to read. Easy, in that Richard Wagamese crafts a very compelling story that draws you in and keeps you reading and hard in that he deals with some difficult and heartbreaking topics. It really made an impact and I plan to read more by this author.
