A classic I've wanted to read for a while, had a free use public domain copy in a e-reader app I tried out and decided this would be the first Jules Verne I try. I feel like this is such a broadly known overall tale that I "knew" what happened in broad strokes. But I was caught off guard that the actual namesake doesn't happen for quite a while into the book. I found almost all of the Iceland set posturing pretty boring. And based solely on the time period it contains some problematic generalizations at worst to outright bigotry throughout (particularly the beginning). But I tried hard to "get" what the time period would've been like to live in back when it was written. I think that this book suffers a bit with how connected globally we are now, and aren't really interested at how pleasantly surprised some English dudes are with the novelty (for them) of Icelandic Skyr.
Surprisingly modern in tone and content, especially for a book written 160 years ago. Verne is an excellent writer at making the story feel real and very visceral. My biggest frustration with the book is that it wasn't long enough, I feel like the exploration could have extended even further, which I guess is the sign of a good book. I appreciated the discussion of "science" (or at least what they knew of it in the 1860s). The discussion of what Iceland and the people of Iceland were like, seems very fitting and realistic from other books written during the same time period, something which is not always accurate, depending on the motives of the author. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, or the classics, it is a surprisingly easy and enjoyable read.

This book was 90% lame and 10% interesting. In all the pages the only part I liked was when the dinosaurs were fighting each other and the main characters were in mortal peril. Boring, boring boring!

Really fun read. Interesting for me to see the pre-tectonic geologic explanations the Earths processes. Was very surprised how much Verne got right and how detailed the geology was in the book. Would recommend, but will be a little boring at parts if you don’t like rock descriptions.
