Where to start? This fifth book in the Chronicles of Elantra series is just as engrossing as the previous ones. I may be biased, here, because I love Kaylin, but I don't normally love books just because of a character...

There's lots going on here, but mostly it's a continuation of that feeling that something's rousing and it's not a good kind of something. A lot more history of Elantra is revealed, and a bit more of Kaylin's past, as well. And as you learn more about her, you're just a little amazed that she's as relatively normal as she is. Relatively being the key word, here.

It was nice to find out more about the supporting cast of characters. And what a cast it is. Pick these books up to find your favorite(s)... I'm now waiting impatiently for Cast in Chaos. Hurry up & get here... Please?

Short review: Grade B+ or 4/5 stars. While there are some writing quirks that may put off, this series has really delivered in it's emotional impact and characters, as well as a fascinating multi-book mystery that grows with each installment. Definitely pleasing and entertaining!

Finally we get to know what happened during those 6 months we've seen aluded to since the beginning. And also... love Nightshade and Tiamaris and Tara. Bit frustrated that there are still secrets out there, but then it would not be Elantra if it wasn't. And also... dragons in flight :)

I love this series. I sort of skimmed a bit towards the end so I can't quite give this the usual five stars, but it was still entertaining and it got better at the very end.

Continuing my frantic race through this series because my brain won't let me focus on anything else. It dragged a bit for me during the "road trip" middle but the ending was so satisfying.

Does anyone know whatever happened to Nightshade's cloak?

cw: something happened between Barren and Kaylin/Eli when she was 13 and working for his gang that never is articulated in any way other than that it traumatized her. If your brain is likely to supply nightmares into that un-described blankness, heads up.

Michelle Sagara likes to use Kaylin's adventures to talk about really hard and complicated topics. This book looks at how humans react to living in a constant state of fear. I have to say that reading this series in the wake of a global pandemic, I can't help but making comparisons to the shadows in this book. We get to meet several new and fascinating characters in this story including the Tower avatar in the fief of Barren (where Kaylin spent 6 months of time learning how to be an assassin) and Morse (Kaylin's mentor and protector during this dubious educational adventure). Tiamaris and Nightshade also have a lot of time in this one, and it give you some interesting insights into the motivations of both men. This is one of the sadder books, but its also one of the most emotionally satisfying! Enjoy!

Oh, such a great book, loved rereading it, because such a great world, and facing the Devourer, and helping with the his painting, a bit of commenting about Marrin with the baby from Fury, and yeah, a bit of fight with the Consort, but she'll be forgiven by Cast in Flame!!!

Oh, man, such a freaking great book! We got to explore those 6 months between Nightshade, and Kaylin's start with the Hawks, and the reason why, and yeah, just a fantastic book!
