I loved the integration of the vintage pictures and the story! This was a really interesting storyline with good characters and imaginative scenes.
I give it 2 (as opposed to 1 or none) because I did read it all & relatively quickly. I just really wanted it to be better. Not sure what the story is trying to be but sadly some newer, more literary version of Harry Potter? Help me that I read it all...
All I have to say .... This book has everything an exciting thriller , sci-fi, comedy, love story should have.

Exceptional storytelling with a fantastical twist and vintage photographs included.
It's not necessarily a bad book. However, it's not good either.
This book got me into quite a big reading slump, and so I honestly can't be bothered to finish it.

Call me dumb, but I had no idea this book was going to be a sci-fi/fantasy! I hadn't researched it before my friend & I decided to read it. So it was a twist to me when the book turned fantasy. I actually really liked it - I think it is well-written, full of mysteries, different and interesting. I loved the photographs throughout (at the end of the book, I read that they are actual photographs borrowed from collectors and found in flea markets, etc.) - they provided a nice visual. I thought the book was also full of detail and great visualization.
The ending left me wanting more, to find out what happens... I see that there is a sequel coming in January 2014, so I may just have to read on!

well written, peculiar story with creepy and horror elements. Fascinating that such an interesting story was written with the use of, for the most part, real photos found at flea markets and antique shops. Where do these photos come from? Estate sales? Do you select the photos and then create your characters based on them, and then spin your tale? Sixteen-year-old Jacob has grown up listening to the mysterious tales of his grandfather's childhood on a Welsh Island with peculiar playmates during WWII. There was the girl who defied gravity by floating everywhere and the boy who had bees living in his stomach. When his grandfather is killed, Jacob goes to the island to see if he can find any of these peculiar friends of his grandfather still living.
