Think they are gonna turn this into the next Twilight or Hunger Games...not sure it has the clout to compete. Mildly entertaining... I liked the idea of fictional tale matched to old photos.
I love the cover and title of this book but I expected it to be creepier and aimed at a slightly older audience. Still good, but I don't think I'd read any more of the series. I will be seeing the movie tho. :)
A unique and intriguing story - I really enjoyed what this book had to offer, but I am looking forward to learning more about this peculiar world in books 2 and 3.
Some of those photos really gave me the creeps (I do scare easily), and they were extra creepy on my e-ink kindle...

I wanted to like this book because I love the concept but the writing was very "tell don't show." The plot was both predictable and also spoon-fed. There were several times where information was thrown at you without a chance to let the reader guess, like for example the reader saying he saw a man and it was his bus driver. Never once was this driver mentioned before and then the narrator explained the significance of the driver without having any prior foreshadowing so it's just spoon fed to you.
For once I think I'm going to skip the rest of the book and just watch the movie. Life is too short to keep reading such a badly written book.
adventurous
dark
While the idea behind this was really cool, the final result wasn't quite what I expected. It's like, you have an unconventional idea - I really liked how the pictures connected with the story - but you end up with a rather conventional fantasy tale. Don't get me wrong, this wasn't bad - I felt entertained throughout - but I thought it's be more - eerie, I guess.
I've been intrigued with the cover for this book ever since it came out, but since I don't buy hardcover, I've had to wait. I picked up the Kindle version on sale through Amazon, and flew through it. The story was unique, and the characters were fun to travel with.
Edit: I've reduced my stars for the book after more thinking about it. While it was unique and fun... it did not impart the creepiness that it lead me to believe it would.

If you enjoy the unusual & the magical - you will love it. I was in awe & hooked from the get-go.
What. A. Highly. Interesting. Book!!!! Absolutely loved loved loved the plot and setting and characters (basically everything) A really unique idea: set in the modern days, Jacob can't help but wonder if there's some truth to Grandpa's stories of a remote island, an orphanage, and weird collection of pictures. But then an unexpected tragedy happens which led him journeying to an island off the coast of Wales. And it's there that he discovers the ruins of an abandoned orphanage that matches his grandfather's description in the supposedly made up stories. What's more, he came to realize that the children there were very peculiar and different...
This is a thrilling story that'll make you turn page after page, excited to find out what's next. Moreover, there are haunting pictures all throughout the book that'll make the adventure even better. I recommend this book to anyone who likes adventures, fantasy, and thrillers.
DO READ THE WHOLE SERIES!!! :D
