I enjoyed this book a lot. The story employed a new twist on fantasy/supernatural that I found very engaging and I especially liked the seamless integration with the more "mundane" stories of personal relationships to the main character. I found myself trying to figure out the way things worked which is the mark of a good story, to me, as I didn't find any major holes in the setting that might put me off (I have a hard time sticking with a story that doesn't hold water).

My only complaint was the ending was left wide open, but then discovering that a sequel is due to be released this month explains why that was done. I am looking forward to reading it.

I do agree that this book was not nearly as weird as I had thought it would be. However, that does not mean that I didn't enjoy it! I thought the plot was fast-paced, entertaining, and original. I'm sure if all
those people who gave it low ratings had gone into reading it not expecting it to be frightening, but more a story of adventure, they would have thoroughly enjoyed it.

The vintage photos in this book are so strange... it makes you wonder about the story behind them. Which probably has a lot to do with the genesis of this book.

The story in this work is good, and definitely worth reading. I'd give it a solid 3 stars and maybe even think about rounding up to four. Then add the photos and it would be in solid 4 territory... but there were a number of places where I felt that explanation was added just so that another really interesting photo could be put into the book. When I see a movie or a musical and it includes a song or two that makes me think, "wow, they came up with this really good song and it didn't fit into the story, but they loved the song so they jammed it into the performance anyway and really wasted my time there," I... well, I guess I already said how it makes me feel. Anyway, this novel has a couple places where I felt like the author was doing that: jamming a really good picture in where it didn't belong.

I definitely applaud the novelty.

This was a very strange book, though very well written. I stayed engaged but it was not like anything I normally read.

It is about a 16 year old boy who journeys to a remote island off the coast of Wales to learn more about his grandfather, who lived there as a boy, and try and understand things his grandfather had told him.

The book is filled with dark shadows, peculiar children, spooky ruins, danger. It is probably more suited for a younger generation of readers.

I watched the movie first and loved it, and I think I would have loved the books too had I read them first, but there are some story issues and pictures that seem a bit forced in the novel. I still enjoyed it, but I'm I can't give it full marks since the movie was better.

I loooove the moodiness of this setting and there’s some pretty great imagery. I love the acknowledgements at the end of the people who found the photographs used throughout the story. Definitely a comfort read
