“you’re not a curse Lazarus Weston, you’re a storm.”
5+++++ stars!
Going into this book all we know that it is a forbidden love story between Tracien and her godfather Lazarus. The first part of the book takes place as Traci is growing up, becoming a woman and developing feelings for her much older family friend, Lazarus. There is so, so much more to this book and I really suggest not seeking out any spoilers to learn more. This is really all you need to know about the story. Go in blind and enjoy the ride… or burn?
I absolutely fell in love with Lazarus Weston. Like way more than I was expecting when I started this book. He’s grumpy, he doesn’t like people, he’s brilliant, he’s gorgeous and he’s covered in tats. What’s not to love? I loved being inside his head and seeing him grow and change from beginning to end of this book. What Lazarus has been through, and continues to go through throughout this story is truly heartbreaking but so worth it in the end.
Traci was such a great character to get to know as well. We see her growing up from the time she’s 12 up until 18-19. She was such a sassy and fierce character and she’s a bit of a lonely soul which is something I relate to a lot. Without spoiling anything, much like Laz, she goes throughA LOT in this book and seeing her continue to fight for happiness and love was so beautiful.
I don’t want to say anything else about these characters and this story because like I said, the author wants it to be a blind reading experience for us. You will also get to meet some more amazing characters throughout this story that really just tie the whole book together and I just can’t say enough about how freaking beautiful this story is. The writing is some of the best writing I’ve read in a long time as well. Nyla K also can write some pretty bomb sex scenes to be prepared for that!!
This was my first Nyla K novel and I can’t wait to dive into her backlist because I enjoyed this so, so much!

This story is amazing. The angst was superior than any other slow burns I have read. The author is absolutely correct, you have to go into this story blind. Do not look for spoilers. It is necessary that you know nothing going into it.
challenging
dark
mysterious
tense
slow-paced
Graphic: Alcoholism, Drug abuse, Death of parent, Abandonment
But then that’s Lazarus for me. Evil only because of his mystery, and how much I shouldn’t want him. And how good he makes it feel to do the wrong thing.
Have you ever been so intimidated to write a review because you know you will never be able to come close to doing the book justice or even be able to fully express your thoughts or emotions? That is me right now. Sitting at my kitchen table, pulling my hair, trying to string some words together like this is my first time ever writing a review. So I apologize in advance for this inadequate as hell review. I’ll try my best.
This is a story about Tracien and Lazarus. We get to see Traci go from a young child who experiences great grief, to troubled teen with confusing feelings, and finally to adulthood when she turns 18. She loves yoga because it is her strongest connection with her mother besides 90s pop music, and she has been harboring a mad crush on her father’s best friend and also her godfather Lazarus. When Traci is 18, Lazarus is 40 so just know that this is a fairly large age gap.
She’s like a fresh canvas, waiting for my first brush stroke.
Unmarked. Unsullied.
Mine to defile.
Lazarus has had a rough upbringing and it has left him feeling unworthy of love and cursed. His only experiences in life have shown him that life brings pain, pleasure eventually brings pain so he’s always preparing for it. The one constant good thing in his life is his friendship with Damien (Traci’s dad) who he met in high school. The two are BROS and bring the term “bromance” to a whole other level. They lean on each other hard and Lazarus is there for Damien and Traci during their dark days.
I’m not going to go into the plot at all because it is absolutely best to go in blind. I will say this: the writing is damn amazing. It pulled so many emotions out of me that by the end I was exhausted. These characters feel STRONGLY and DEEPLY so I felt each and every emotion along with them and that’s just due to the superb writing skills in my opinion. There was a specific moment in this book that made me sit back, say “this is why I have trust issues”, and proceed to ball my freaking eyes out. That scene blindsided me and Nyla K sucker punched me in the damn gut. I had such a visceral reaction that I immediately put the book down and proceeded to DM Nyla to say how much I hated her but that I also loved her because holy shit this book hit and it hit HARD! I said it in my Instagram stories and I will again: this is Nyla K’s best book to date. I will forgive you at some point Nyla but it’s gonna take some time. I’m still hurting.
I love your scars, your pain, your....destruction. I love your broken.
I highly recommend reading the forward before just diving in. Nyla put some warnings in here and it is up to you as a reader to go over these and heed them.
Read this if you enjoy:
-big age gaps
-taboo
-dads best friend
-heroes who feel like that don’t deserve love
-ANGST
-super sexy smutty scenes
Overall rating 5 stars

Its like marmite, you either love it or hate it!
This is a first read for me from Nyla and I can say it was brutal on my emotions. I was so torn on whether I should like what I was reading or not and there was times I was like oh no!!!! But I kept reading anyway!! I have came to the conclusion that you would hate but love Nyla for this book and I can't even deny it.
I'm open to taboo and I went into TBiBR with no clue what it was about but Booksmacked Mel said I should read it so I did!!!! I'm assuming she's Book Smacked Mel because you want to smack her with the book she recommends during and after reading it!!!! This book had that reaction from me!!! There is so much heartache amongst these pages that you can't help but keep reading despite how your emotions are telling you not too!!! I have to admit the ending was perfect! If taboo/age gap is something you don't mind then this is a definite read for you!!!

“You want to lose yourself to me?” “I’ll never lose myself with you, Lazarus,” she says with assurance, hands resting on my shoulders. “You’re a part of me. You have been since before I knew what any of this could feel like”
Tracien & Lazarus are two perfectly imperfect halves of a whole. They both have had one constant in their lives, and that is Damien - Traci’s dad and Laz’s best friend and business partner. “To Burn in Brutal Rapture,” is a taboo age gap romance written by Nyla K, and is centered around the forbidden love that Traci and Lazarus become to share. It is a life story of sorts, surrounding Traci and how Lazarus became her North Star. Heart wrenching and soul crushing situations brought them together. Traci became a shell of herself, relying on a prescription drug addition just to stop the noise. Lazarus was her constant comfort, and became her best friend and obsession early on in life. Lazarus fought his inner turmoil surrounding his feelings for Traci, and how it would effect his lifelong friendship with Damien.
There were moments my heart ached for each of them individually and together as a couple. They had so many moments of sheer bliss, and others that brought me to tears.
I had to keep this as spoiler free as possible because this book utterly broke me in half. You HAVE to read this book, because there is just so much more to this than what I can write in words. It is long, and it navigates through Tracien’s life early on, but it is WORTH the build up to the end.
Top read of 2020 for sure. Nyla K you absolutely crushed me with this book.
