We love a knight that is like "oh these clothes are gendered? Yeah, I think not anymore". Excited to see Utena continue and learn her story. I already see the them talking about gender and sexuality and I love it

Spoileralso why did she lick that guy's tears tho

Prologue lasted pretty long, and the story with the student council surprised me.

Hime being treated as an object to be passed on to whichever student council member wins the duels doesn’t sit well with me, and I’m happy that Utena points that out for how messed up it is—hoping Hime will see that eventually 😭

Love Utena’s style though. It looks like it was drawn in the 60’s but was made in the 90’s. I hope she and Hime end up together because this book is already giving some lesbian.

An intriguing start to a classic series. It holds up pretty well, considering. And is surprisingly okay with lesbian supertext, especially for a manga.

Granted, there's also a dark-skinned character being compared to a thing, treated as a slave, and needing to be saved by the protagonist. And she got bitch slapped at least five times this volume alone. At least her savior's a girl this time, saving her from a dude? So girl power?

Lordy, Japan. We need to talk about your racism problem.

This is an interesting series. Apparently the anime is well loved. This manga didn’t leave that much of an impression on me.

It’s an interesting premise, I’m always down for headstrong female protagonists. It’s just that it was odd the Rose Bride appears to exist as property, she’s resigned to that fact and she gets hit do many times and it’s uncomfortable to watch. I don’t really know how to feel about it but I think I’ll check out the anime.

biased bc reading this for a school research project
the art is gorgeous. the number of flowers is obnoxious. everything you could want from a shoujo.

what the heck IS GOING ONNNN AT THIS PRIVATE SCHOOL :sob:
> SERIOUSLY BIZARRE SHIT IS GOING DOWWNNNN — what IS this plOT
> very much an unexpected plot (to me) for such a highly acclaimed series in the shoujo space

I never watched the anime growing up but I decided to give them manga a go. I think I would prefer this in anime for but I'm curious to see how the plot goes
