Utena, tome 1

I can't say how interested I am in the story but I just love the character of Utena and the artwork.

still not sure how to rate manga, but i'm excited to read the rest of this series. seems like a great subversion of gender roles. also, happy about utena and athy being hella gay, though slavery isn't exactly... awesome...

wondering if i should watch the anime. i've heard it's better than the manga and apparently it's all up on hulu?

Definitely not the typical manga I'd seek out, but I found a complete series (it's short) for cheap and it had been on my radar because of its queer narrative and I've heard great things about the show. I rarely watch anime and usually only read manga if they're the source for television or movies (and not an adaptation). 'Utena' is somewhere in the middle and even though it was published before a year before the show, was developed simultaneously.

It's the first true shoujo I've read (not sure if 'Banana Fish' counts, or 'To Terra', a shonen by a shoujo magnaka) and the artwork dreamy and magical which is typical of the genre, but really enjoyable to read. The plot is bizarre, but hopefully will speak to and empower my inner teenager as the series goes on.

different than the anime, but still enjoyable. the scanlation was pretty terrible at first but by the end of the volume, it had improved greatly.

I’m reading this because I’m a fan of the anime, but it seems a bit more.... heterosexual. It also wasn’t much new from the anime except for the very end

a fairly average plot- middle school age girl falls in love and goes on an adventure because of it? sorta? revolutionary girl utena has been an interesting read, to say the least. sadly, it falls into a few bad tropes regarding the treatment (by both creator and characters) of anthy, the only character of colour in the story. i also found myself often forgetting that the main character is supposed to be in 7th or 8th grade…

anywho, i have however heard a LOT of incredible things about the anime, and i hold higher hopes for it.

I’m so thankful they stopped saying “Licky lick” although it did take about 100 pages to stop using that nickname hahaha

Let's go, lesbians!
