Somehow very nostalgic even though I've never read Utena before.
I read this series ages ago in high school, but it's been so long I don't really remember them all that well. I've been on a manga kick recently and decided they were worth a re-read.
While the prologue was quite long (and therefore a little off putting), I understand how necessary it is to lay the foundation for Utena's character. Once we finally got to the meat of the story with Utena at the Academy, it flew by all too quickly. There was not enough of it to satisfy me and I'm itching to get my hands on the next one.
The series as a whole was wonderfully done. I won't discuss the plot here, but this series is a must read for any manga fan, especially of the fantasy and magic girl genres.

This was my first experience with manga but I really enjoyed it! It was a fast read, of course, and mostly world-building but at the end, I find myself intrigued and will try to find the next volume. I love the gender-bending aspects as well as the mystery at the book’s core.
Since I am not remotely familiar with this genre or style, I don’t feel qualified to leave a starred review.

I was/am very much a Sailor Moon type gal, so I never got into Utena when both of these series were popular in my pre-teen/teenage years. However, that said, I find Utena's character refreshing and fun, much like Makoto, Michiru and Haruka from Sailor Moon.
Sadly, Utena gets slapped around quite a lot for her brash tom-boyish appeal and sportsmanship, which is also unfortunately relatable. The attitudes of the supporting characters in this manga so far make it kind of hit/miss as to whether I'll really invest time into it, although I came across the first five volumes of this, so I'll probably read it all just since I have it in my collection already.

The whole thing is way too complicated for its own good, but Utena is a wonderful main character. I want to see where she goes even though I find the internal mythology of the story excessive and thus boring. CW for this story: one of the main female characters gets hit several times by her boyfriend. I understand avenging this is part of Utena's motivation but it still feels really gross.
I started reading this because I heard there were swords, fairy tale subversions, and a wlw couple. So far, it has not disappointed me.
As far as magical girl stories go, this one’s pretty much a classic. It’s definitely got some femslash undertones, but it’s by the makers of Sailor Moon so you know their story telling for their target age group is on point. It’s fun, but not particularly deep.
I'm so glad I read this. I've seen a bit of Utena and I like it, but it's really weird. Probably the weirdest anime I've ever watched - and I've watched Sex Pistols - but it's also really fascinating and even though the fact that nothing is ever explained is infuriating, it always keeps me coming back.
Maybe it's because I knew what to expect, but this was less weird and less confusing than the first few episodes of the anime. I'm so glad I got this for my birthday (thanks Sylwia! xx) and I'm looking forward to the rest of this series :D

Tbh I like the manga's story even more than the anime's version of it!
