Okay look let me confess first. I have read the abridged version. Yeah and I know I shouldn’t say much since I didn’t read the full story but I really have to say this much though that The story was indeed good. For instance I liked Pip (honestly when he was younger) but I couldn’t understand his obsession with Stella like hey man she doesn’t give a damn about you yet….I can’t understand um..genuine question ‘Is just being beautiful enough of a trait for guys to fall in love even though that person acts like a bitch?’
I felt sad for Joe and how Pip had treated him when he just came to give Pip a visit. People do tend to forget kindness and love don’t they? And I also liked Merguch. He was a good fella. (sorry I can’t remember how to spell his name

Pip is an orphan, taken in my his much older sister who often beats him. He has very few people in his life who are kind to him. His life is spun out on a different path when a criminal threatens him if he doesn't give him food and provisions, and when he meets a high society cruel old woman stuck in the past. Now, he's determined to be a gentleman, and in turn starts looking down on those of the class he grew up in.

This is my first Charles Dickens. I've read so many books that call themselves "Dickensian" that I finally had to give in. Plus, I've owned this one for ages. I've got no excuses anymore!

I had a weird experience with this one. The first section, especially the first chapters, I felt very engaged in. There were descriptions that felt so vibrant. I was really feeling for Pip. There were these cartoon-y characters like you'd expect in a satire. But the more I went into it, especially in act two, I swear I couldn't stay awake. I wasn't following what was happening, I was struggling to turn the page or care. So, to save my reading, I switched to the audiobook around the start of act three. That ended up getting me back into it. I don't know if I was genuinely bored by act two or if I wasn't doing well, so take that with a grain of salt. But, I thought the audiobook (narrated by Simon Prebble) was quite well done, enough to make me like it again! Pip is a character who starts off innocent before dipping into the corruption the upper class gives him. He's happy to play into those expectations they have even when it means he's at a disadvantage because he thinks he can be the exception, the one that rises above his station and becomes one of them. But when he's finally there, he sees the reality: that these people are cruel and self-serving to everyone. It reminds me a lot of poorer people voting for billionaires to get tax cuts. Towards the end of the book, I really liked how Pip slowly figures out how wrong he's been and starts naturally acting kind around people again. By the end, I had come around to it all and was able to appreciate what the different characters are doing (Wemmick comes to mind). I just really had a bad experience with the middle part, so that has to affect my rating somehow.

Overall, I have to give this book a lower rating just based on my poor reading experience with it, but I'm glad I switched to the audio and finished it out.

As far as classics go, one of my favourites. I went into this blind so the twist at the end of who Pip’s benefactor was and who was the murderer was very satisfying. Pip’s journey up the class ladder but realising that it isn’t money that makes a man, is universal and still hits as hard today.
