This was one of only two books in my life I hadn’t finished, and that was about 22 years ago. I decided to revisit it and just listen to the audiobook so I could finally be done with it.

Satis House.

в этом году, наконец, дослушала эту книгу на Английском в замечательной озвучке Gildart Jackson (после прослушивания его акцентов на х2 мне больше не страшен никакой listening)

I feel like this is a book I should have loved. I don't know, maybe I don't like Dickens.
I really enjoyed the story, and for all intents and purpose I should have Loved this book.
But I think its the writing style that I don't like.

Do I not like Dickens?

I have wondered if my issue is with Dickens on a few different occasions. For example I recently wrote a review for [b:A Christmas Carol|5326|A Christmas Carol|Charles Dickens|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1406512317l/5326._SY75_.jpg|3097440] I had rated it 2 stars and could not remember why. I really liked the story.
I thought it must be a mistake so I started reading it again and then it all came back. The writing was so dry.
And now writing a review for Great Expectations. I am thinking back to the story and I loved the story.

Pip, Miss Havisham, I remember it all with such fondness... it was the actual writing that made this a 3 star book for me.

This is an unfortunate realization.
adventurous slow-paced

Classic

Classic and truly enjoyed reading this book. I was shocked at times. The beginning a little slow to get moving.

Decent introduction to Dickens. Sort of trudged through the beginning, but my interest picked up towards the middle as drama started to unfold. This book is very... tight. Almost all subplots seem to lead back to the main story in one way or another. The style kind of lends itself to read more like a play - suspiciously coincidental, yet natural and punchy in its twists.

I generally disliked how the characters were written. I would have preferred some characters to have more lore unrelated to the main story; instead they mostly felt like caricatures written solely for Pip's development. This in itself is fine, and probably just a matter of personal taste. But since I wasn't too invested in the main story either, my reading experience felt flat.

Nonetheless, I can see how someone could really enjoy this book. It's a classic coming-of-age story, and I think it does a good job in capturing the gradual process of discarding incorrect beliefs and reevaluating your own judgement of character, self or other. It touched upon many universal themes such as classism and wealth disparity. Another prevalent theme was love, and the contrast between blinding desire and steady, sacrificial love. I found myself critical of Pip's foolishness when it came to romance, which is probably a sign that Dickens is doing something right.

Overall I'm glad to have read it, and glad to be done with it.

4.5. I was completely gripped from the start and literally could not put it down in the last third, even if the middle was a little meandering. This is a fantastic story and I expected no less from the Dickens, the master of the complex spider web of characters and circumstances. Herbert, Joe and Biddy are the best part of this book :,)

I liked Jane Eyre better, this is a bit more an adventure story.

3.5

Don’t even get me started on how boring this book was.
