I really enjoyed this book.
Presented neutrally, reader friendly, informed by science first and cited every step. I will be looking for more from both Teddy Goetz and Sophie Standing, whos illustrations were beautiful throughout.
Great job both. Great read.

“Trans or cis, we are all on gender journeys. And all gender journeys are valid.”
I found this book very informing and will definitely pick up a physical copy when it comes out.
I especially appreciated it talks about the history of gender and the role white supremacy played a part in the way we see gender today.
Gender is indeed very strange, but this book makes it a bit easier to understand.
I want to thank NetGalley for an ARC of this book, it did not influence my opinion in any way.

3.5 stars
I dont have any strong feelings in regards ro this book, hence the lower rating.
While I did find it unique and insightful, it was a bit too academical for me + i think it would've been better if it was longer and delved deeper into the topics discussed.

My attention was immediately captured by the cover. I adored this. It takes a subject matter that can be complicated for some to understand and explains it in an easily understandable and digestible way. It is also super visually captivating and the art is beautiful and not distracting from the message. Plan to recommend this book to anyone who will listen. I was able to read it start to finish super quickly. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC.
This is more a graphic design book than a comic/graphic novel.
Really didactic book about gender and hormones and different cultures although there is a lot of information per page which makes it very dense.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Beautifully illustrated, well detailed graphic non fic about gender. Loved the format and the simplicity whilst also being thoroughly referenced and honest. Definitely has sparked thoughts for me.
This book was very interesting as an informative guide to the basics of gender. I think it would be excellent for anyone trying to learn and understand more about gender but not really having an idea of where to start - perhaps a young teen or parent. The illustrations were clear and had a good colour palette. I gave it five stars as it was concise and accessible with explanations and definitions but was still interesting. Overall a very good guide to gender condensed into a small book.
I am often frustrated by the claim frequently found in Internet comment sections... "there are only two genders!" That naive insistence ignores chromosomal "abnormalities", hormone fluctuations, the impact of colonialism and white supremacy, and literally thousands of years of cultural experience to the contrary.
"Gender is Really Strange" is both a quick read (presented as a graphic book) and incredibly informative (heavily annotated). It makes every effort to make a very complicated subject accessible, and it mostly succeeds. (I'm a 50 year old ally who reads extensively and has advanced degrees and I still found new and unfamiliar info here!) Due to the complexities of the science, this book is probably best read by high schoolers or older, but even those who don't understand all of the info contained will be struck by the revelation of the intricacies of gender and gender expression.
My thanks to the author, publisher, and #NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC of this book.
