2.5 stars down

Way too many characters to keep track of
Extra half star cause Belle didn't die
Not really a twist for the mystery, pretty obvious
Too much build up, 75% of the book the Evans women weren't really doing anything???
How many butterscotches can that woman eat
dark funny tense

Great premise but underdeveloped characters and weird pacing.

I thought this was a fun read, audiobook was great and added to it. Vampires in the south, count me in! The Evans ladies were fun and I loved their banter. While it’s not “scary” I didn’t mind as I didn’t think it would lean that way too heavily. The mystery and suspense of who was behind all this kept me intrigued and I went through this pretty fast. I’ll definitely check out more should there be any future books

I wish I liked this a little more than I did, but overall this was still fun. Not sure if I'm interested enough to return for the upcoming sequel or not.

What a fun book! I hope the next in the series comes out soon, the teaser at the end got me. I had some issues with pacing here and there, and the 1999/2000 diet culture stuff was accurate but unnecessary and I wish it hadn't been there. This was a good time on audio, each character was distinct both in narration and development/voice.

If you enjoyed [book:The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy|58510253], don't mind a lack of romance, and kind of enjoyed the scary bits of Practical Magic, I highly encourage you to check this out!

"Incorporating just the right amount of Southern sass, this gruesomely descriptive yet heartrendingly poignant tale will leave horror fans hungry for the next installment." (Booklist)

"Ryan lays the mythology on thick, relishing details big and small about both the strigoi and the Evans family, sometimes at the expense of brisk pacing. Still, it’s a pleasure to spend time in her carefully rendered world, and she packs plenty of bloodshed among the copious exposition. This has bite." (Publishers Weekly)

"Told via multiple points of view, a well-developed and utterly unforgettable cast of characters, and an engaging narration that draws readers in immediately, this novel will make readers root for the Evans women to beat back both the ghouls and the family secrets that haunt them." Overall I like the book although it wasn't quite what I was expecting. Definitely darker and more sad than the light hearted cover made me think.
