I don't very often come across debut novels that I end up giving a high score to, but I found this book and the concept of a granny vampire slayer to be extremely enjoyable!

I'm very excited for Another Fine Mess, the second book in this series, as this novel ended on one heck of a cliffhanger.

What a great book this was! It was something a little different than I would normally pick and definitely wasn't what I expected that it was, but it was so good!

We meet the Evans women who own a funeral home in a little town. They encounter some strange things in their funeral home that is not so typical of the typical strange things you find around a funeral home. The little town is plagued by random gruesome dead bodies that not only the Sheriff is trying to figure out, but so are the Evans' family women.

We learn about some of the creepy occurrences and what they are. The Evans women definitely have their work cut out for them during this time, both at the funeral home and in figuring out some old family history/drama.

If you like some supernatural beings like draculas and zombies as well as some good ol' fashioned murder mystery with a tiny YA feel, this one is for you for sure! Go check it out. It was just released this month and you need to pick it up immediately!

Grabbed this book from the library based on the cover art and title. Bless Your Heart is the story of four generations of women running a funeral parlor and guarding the secret that sometimes their dead clientele don’t stay dead. The “strigoi” that rise from the dead are more zombie than vampire, and I enjoyed the slow burn reveals of how the Evans family deals with them. Very good world building. But the book had way too many POV characters. I felt like you could skip some chapters entirely without missing a thing. The book was at its best when written from the POV of any of the four Evans women, but especially the 15 year old daughter Luna who is just starting to learn about the family business and the part that she plays in it. I think the book would’ve been better if told entirely from Luna’s perspective. This is the first book of what will be a series, so I’m interested in reading more about this world, and hopeful that the storytelling will improve on its flaws.

I love Ducey, and I think I want to be like her when I grow up.

A great horror-humor-cozyish mashup read for the Halloween season.

Recommended, unless you're squeamish.

I really, really liked this book. I'm sure you all are thinking 'then why only three stars?'
The truth?
I am really upset that it's not a stand-alone novel. I am so frustrated with Every. Single. Book. becoming a series. I believe late-stage capitalism is hurting the publishing industry.
This could have had a really awesome, tender ending, and instead we got a dumbass cliffhanger. The ending was incredibly cheapened.
With all of this said, I enjoyed this book a lot. It checked a lot of boxes for me.
funny
horror, but not scary
family dynamics
dogs
good cop vs bad cop

If it weren't for the ending, it would've gotten four stars, so use that information at your own discretion.
No lies, I hated Luna. I know I was her age once, and probably would've done the same dumb things she did, but she really ticked me off.
I did spot the obvious plot twist right away but that didn't detract anything for me.
Lastly, a word to the wise, DON'T read the acknowledgements until you are done. There is a huge spoiler in them.

Gave me Charlaine Harris vibes in a very good way. Butterscotch candies!

It was more of a straight forward horror and I though it would be, but a highly enjoyable read.
