Oh this is a good Dave Robicheux novel. Dave and Clete up in Montana....fishing and vacationing brings them back to Sally Dee! Loved it!!
I always enjoy this series but this one was especially enjoyable to me because it was set in Montana in an area with which I am extremely familiar. It was fun watching the characters traverse roads and go places where I have actually been. I usually listen to this series and I found I had Will Patton's voice in my head for the entire reading, which is not a bad thing.

I'm so late to the party it's embarrassing. Why didn't anyone tell me I should read Burke? Apparently this is no. 17 in the Robicheaux series, seventeen! And it's so good! I won't get into exactly how good it is because everyone else already knows. I'm excited (so many books to enjoy! more background on Dave and Clete!), a little nervous (what if they disappoint?) and very, very happily surprised.
What we have here is a crime without the cover of Burke's regional expressions and loving descriptions of Louisiana. It shows that Burke can actually write a strong book without those. I enjoyed this one simply because I could understand what they were saying. Not at all sure that a Montana sheriff would deputize a detective from Louisiana, especially with the FBI already involved. Did I miss something about Alafair's location? Otherwise, the book does seem to be long and has a typical Dave Robicheaux elements.
The story isn't bad, but I'm not impressed with the overuse of cliches in the writing. I could see this becoming a movie that would end up faring only moderately well, depending on the casting.
Let's just say I put this down to read two other books and then came back to it.

Not the strongest outing for Burke in his Robicheaux series. A bit overpreachy at times and a reveal at the end felt tacked on and unconvincing. Too long for the amount of content. Still for all that this writer always makes for a compelling read and I don’t feel like he could ever dip below 3 stars.
Dave Robicheaux is always a great character. This book is a great mystery read if you want to see what's going on with Dave and Clete.
The story was brilliant, as always, but the Montana setting was not nearly as interesting or engaging for me as Acadiana.
