On the whole I really enjoyed this book. I did find one or two of the stories a bit strange, but as they are quick to read it didn't deter from the other stories in any way. All the short stories are about ghosts, haunted places etc so if you like this genre it's a must read! This is the second Kate Mosse book I've read & it definitely won't be the last!

I'd give it a two and a half stars. I really enjoyed some of the tales from this book but felt the rest of them really dragged on and weren't at all scary or haunting. Still a good book to read through the creepy months though :)

a collection of short stories - some based on historical tales or folk lore. These tales feel rooted in the places they are set. Many of them carried similar feelings and plots. I would have enjoyed more variety in the stories.

I'm surprised how much I liked this. I really liked Kate Mosse's writing and feel like reading her in short story/novella form works better for me than reading her full length novels as I sometimes get lost in the details.
These gentle ghost stories aren't scary, but there's an element of comfort to them so don't expect any gory or surprise twist. You are gentle led to the end and you know where the story's going to go. Because of this, I don't think many readers will enjoy this collection. Even I like a good twist every now and again with my short story reading.
I do think, though, there were too many short stories in this collection as, around the 50%/60% mark, I was getting a little bored and began to find it a slog to read this collection, but the first half of the book, I loved and flew through.
A cosy collection of ghost stories that readers will either through enjoy or find incredibly dull.

It's between a 3-4. I think when I read it again, it may go up in rating, but this time I just didn't warm to quite a few of them. However, there were many stories in this ghostly book that were brilliant and I really enjoyed it. Definitely worth a read for those who love a ghost story.

This collection of short stories is quite rightly described as 'haunting tales' rather than 'ghost stories'. Enlivening the same settings that feature in her novels, Kate Mosse has created a selection of stories based on local folklore, legends and places she has visited that have inspired her. Many stories involve old houses, ruins, churches and 'timeslips' that connect characters past and present. After (or before) each story, the author has included a brief description of the inspiration behind it; I appreciated this extra insight.
Good to curl up with on winter nights.

I almost gave it four stars but decided to change it as it's so very rare that I enjoy all the stories in a book of short stories! Some are spooky, some are unsettling and some are more atmospheric than creepy at all, but I enjoyed them all in different ways.
