The mysterious air of the book is fun. The relationship between Gideon and Harrow feels a little fast and forced, moving from "hate" to "love" with a speed that sometimes feels genuine and sometimes feels toxic. My main complaint is that nobody gets their kisses in in the entire book. Boo. Also, very grumpy that we don't get to enjoy the Gideon/Harrow stevonnie perspective for very long.

Gideon was a fantastic narrator, funny and flawed and truly unique. She's chaotic and hilarious!
This book took me a while to get through, and I think that's partly due to my brain being picky about reading, but also partly because of how gory and tense things got in the story. I couldn't always stomach it for multiple chapters at a time. Between the injuries and the sometimes-dense plot, this was a book I had to tackle in smallish chunks. That being said, I'm starting the sequel right away so I don't forget any important plot points.

What follows is dark, gruesome, scary, and yet Gideon's narration brings a levity and humor that is much needed. This book could have been super tense and terrifying if they went the thriller route, but instead you're laughing out loud in between gruesome scenes. This book was a wild ride from start to finish, and at no point did I know what was going to happen, which is pretty rare for me. It was recommended to me from multiple friends and I was NOT disappointed whatsoever. I was hooked on this, finding any opportunity to listen to the audiobook or turn on my Kobo for the ebook. The audiobook narrator, Moira Quirk, is absolute perfection, delivering each of the voices distinctly and making it easy to keep track of the large cast of characters. This book starts out a bit hunger games, has a dash of murder mystery, and a whole lot of necromancy. Taking a break to process before I read the sequel, but you better believe I've already bought it!
