My 10.5 year old son and I just finished this book for our summer buddy read and I have to say that we both LOVED it. It has enough rhythm, mystery and intrigue to satisfy me the child-at-heart adult reader while also providing the perfect dose of action to satisfy my son. On that note, there was so much to discuss when we both finished this book! Everything from favorite character, setting, plot twist to magical creature was worthy of a lengthy discussion over pancakes and OJ (mine may have been a mimosa). If you are looking for your next buddy read with your pre-teen fantasy loving book reader then may I suggest this one?

I loved this book! You wouldn't even think it's a middle grade novel. I loved the history that was a part of the magic/story. I loved the 3 mains and their banter - Cocoa the hellhound was my fave lol. I can't wait for the next installment.

I am definitely biased towards Angie Thomas, Jackson, New Orleans, the term “home training”, and supernatural middle grade fiction, but I love this and hope it becomes a 50 book series.
