If you are from Jackson, READ THIS BOOK!!! So much of it felt like a love letter to the city and as it is my home and probably always will be at least in some way, this book meant the world to me. It was also just a truly killer book. So fun and the characters felt so alive and real. Absolutely loved it.

I spend my days with middle school students who are not unlike the characters in this book. In fact, as I read it I noted many similarities. The likenesses made me chuckle to myself.
The plot twists kept coming and the set up for the sequel has me eagerly waiting for book two.
Well done, Angie.

Nic Blake knows she is a Remarkable. Her father is a Manifestor, but says she's not ready to learn yet, even on her twelfth birthday. But hey, at least she gets a hellhound as a pet! What Nic knows is that her mother left her, and she and her father have to move to a new city every time an Unremarkable might suspect her father's power.
But what if everything she's learned has been a lie? Who can she trust to find the truth?
This new middle-grade fantasy based in African-American history and folklore is a great start to a new series. Fast-paced, humorous, and surprising, this will keep readers wanting more.

I thought this was an excellent addition to the middle grade fantasy sphere. Angie Thomas is such a great writer, the way she writes characters just makes them feel so real. There were a few issues with the fantasy aspects and world building but I feel like these books are only going to get better as Thomas continues getting better at writing the fantasy genre.

Very fun. Interesting take on the chosen one trope. Mildly educational too. Felt a bit weird to have Christianity as part of the fantasy world.
Fun new fantasy series for fans of Amari and other magical series. Nic Blake is a relatable character that readers will cheer for and identify with. Must have for middle grade libraries.

This book is doing too much and does very little of it well. Characters lack depth, many trite fantasy plot twists, and even some exchanges and plot points that simply don’t make sense or were just… bad Nic thought the hoof dude was going to kill her, and SAW him commit violent crimes. Why does she suddenly feel good about inviting him to move into her community??? // You’re gonna bring up a girl dying of leukemia like 1 time just so she can be used as inspo??🫠 Her “bravery” was refusing to believe she’d die from an illness that DID kill her!?!? Nic is worried about not being able to beat impossible odds?? How is this a helpful story to tell her at this time, and more importantly, why does it work!?!? lol // Secret lineage of magic? Okay cool, reasonable storytelling. But secret uncle, secret books, secret mom, secret brother, secretly rich and powerful, secretly the weapon holder AND secretly a super villain, AND the weapon is not just a weapon it’s a dragon AND my bff is a super special human (tho I do like JP)… exhausting lol The difference in quality of this book compared to Angie Thomas’ other works is stark. I know this is a project she started before The Hate U Give and fought with for years, and I think the (1)authorial passion sink hole of doom (2) change in genre and (3) change in age category are responsible for this dip in quality. I think it’s possible she could more skillfully execute a fresh fantasy or MG idea in the future? But I do not think I will be reading Nic Blake #2.
