As part of my new goal to read more Canadian books, I picked up this poetry collection from a woman who was born in India and immigrated to Canada at a young age. I had no deal what it contained. In the best traditions of feminist non-fiction poetry, this follows a very personal journey the author took following emotionally, physically devastating circumstances, it dwells in darker moments but gradually transitions to ideas of love and healing.
Love for the self, finding love after losing it, after experiencing violence, but also love of family, specifically women, past generations with less choices, specifically her mother and thinking about the struggles of immigrating as an adult, of the traditions of her generation, of the culture and country left behind. Also love of women as friends and colleagues, not competition. Heart-breaking and so gentle by turns.
Kaur also provides frequent art pieces to accompany the poetry, like single ink lines that coalesce into recognizable shapes that further emphasize the poem's themes. A perfect match for the quiet, almost casual formatting of the words.
The formatting means I'm a little unsure of the poems that struck me the most bear the titles I've included, but I THINK these are the ones that will stay with me:
-the underrrated heartache
-home
-worth is not something we transfer
-the art of growing
-self-love
-the day I leave
-rest in peace
-we are not enemies
-to witness a miracle
-thank you
-the lies they sell
-human
-timeless
⚠️SA, domestic abuse, infanticide

A wonderful book and uplifting despite some of the poems being about trauma. The author must have a great character to blossom into the woman she is. Would highly recommend
