I'm certain reading both of Rupi Kaur's books in such a short amount of time wasn't the best idea for remaining critical. However, taking them in such close proximity helped make clear the differences between them.

The Sun and Her Flowers is a marginally better constructed collection of poetry. As much as I still don't prefer the all lower-case, line-breaks, and lacking punctuation, I did notice improvement in the poetry's quality. I was pleased to see the inclusion of many more and much longer poems (some several pages). Even the "instapoetry" seemed better constructed around an image or feeling than a 1-2 scenario (I was _ but you were _).

I enjoyed the section and exploration Kaur dedicates to racial identity and that she branches into her family's stories rather than just her own. My biggest dislike throughout the collection was the overuse of phrases focused on what's between women's legs.

April is poetry month, so I wanted to read some poetry! I tried to pay attention to style and form. Hopefully I will absorb and start thinking more like a poet

Honestly, I wanted to give this a go, even after not liking the first book. What if I actually liked this, you know? But no, it's not for me.

This is not poetry in my eyes. It's thoughts on a page. Some of them were good, but those were far fewer than in the first book.

I didn't enjoy it. I'm giving it 1 star for the last part, which was okay, for the few thoughts I liked, and for the one good night's sleep I had thanks to this.

If someone were to ask me to descibe myself with a book of poetry, I know what my answer would be.

She broke my heart again and again and she showed me that being a woman really is a universal experience, no matter where you live your life.

I am not good with poetry in English, because I haven't learned yet the expressions or how something rhymes, but she did speak to my soul and reading her words were like reading her stream of contiousness, which is how I wrote in my journal as well.

Gorgeously emotional collection of poems that touches base on so many aspects of the modern immigrant woman’s life.

This book can heal your soul.

Disclaimer that I am not the target audience applies. For this reason, I think the book would resonate much more with someone who had experiences similar to Kaur's. That said, I did appreciate her (Kaur's) emotional directness especially in the first two parts of the book. I also ended up highlighting seven of the poems.

Kaur also narrates the audiobook, and is mostly fine despite a slow narration speed and occasionally overwrought delivery.
