Hot Comb is a nostalgic trip.  It took me back to my childhood, not only with hair care, but with penny candy, money in the bra, my first relaxer at the salon, being made fun of due to my hair texture, and the music. The first story almost had me on the floor. Lots of trauma surrounding hair care for sure.  Black hair is a process and not for the faint of heart. I loved this book tackled so many different situations.  Some cultures hair is a flippant thing that their life doesn’t stop for.  In the black community, it is not the same. Many of us put aside a day for hair care, and I do mean a whole day.  This book expresses black hair culture very accurately with no stereotypes. And the ads for products..spot on.  Black hair care has come a long way.  I am not ashamed of my texture, and am sad that people used to make me feel that way.

I did really enjoy this, it was a quick and easy read and different to anything I’ve read before. I really liked the sketched out art style and the themes of the stories but I had a couple issues with it:

•several of the stories ended very abruptly and I wanted more
•the cursive writing throughout was difficult for me to read at times, making the reading experience not as enjoyable

This was a short story collection in graphic novel form. I honestly wasn't super enamored. I am not a huge fan of short stories in general (I always want more). Some of the stories I really enjoyed but others I thought fell fault. I think my biggest dislike of the book though was the art. It just wasn't to my style and I often felt the art didn't capture the feel of the story, so it felt disjointed to me.

i really enjoyed the format of all the short stories! loved the art, the last two stories (sisters and daughters, last angolan saturday) we’re my favorite. also thought the ads in between were cool too.
