An excellent memoir/story/cultural portrait all tied to Black hair. So much of other parts of life happen within or around the styling and setting of hair. It gave me insight into a culture of women I haven't had much access to. I am touched and educated all the way through, as I see interactions within and outside of the Black culture so often revolving around hair - what is in fashion, touching hair you shouldn't, the time it takes to curl, soften, take care of Black hair. And what's more it's beautiful to look at. I am more aware because of it.
YOOOOOO. BONNETS OFF TO THIS GRAPHIC NOVEL. I have nothing bad to say about it. The illustration was all black and white, but that showed the artists versatility in playing with the weight of ink and different tones. Especially considering all of the characters in the book were Black. And you were able to tell even though most of their skin weren't painted as such. This was a collection of stories and they were put together so well. Enough personal story about the author and their life, without feeling heavy. And then stories either from people we were never formally introduced to or her imagination. Either way, it was written for any Black person who grew up and had a hot comb brought to their head. It wasn't just a book about hair. But the products we have all lived and died by wove everything together perfectly. SUCH A GREAT READ.
A graphic novel of short stories all centered around black hair. Between each story is an ad for a fictitious (but could be real) hair product. Those cracked me up.
Some of the stories made me cry. All of the stories were good.
I love that she was in part inspired by Linda Barry! Makes me want to pick up Making Comics again. :)

Super intimate tales about Black hair that provide opportunities for representation and empathy. The drawing style is fresh and urgent, that lends to a deeper emotional connection to the stories. A wonderful book to stumble upon at the library!
Beautiful artwork and storytelling. There is a table of contents at the beginning but I wish the book had been more explicitly presented as a collection of short stories - I would have been happy to have the first story expanded to book-length.

such an interesting comic on the culture surrounding hair in the black community! as someone who does not have textured hair, i loved seeing the care and process that comes with having textured hair. also the use of a comic to visually depict this experience was incredibly helpful to my understanding of the process.

Loved the idea, appreciated the stories, but it was a like not a love for the art and how it all got pulled together.
A Lynda Barry like memoir shorts on Black women and hair. Anxiety, love, family crisis, and travel are covered. The one page mock ads between chapters were a clever touch.
