This collection of short stories really grew on me. The artwork has a chaotic but charming quality to it and lends itself well to the narrative, which is mostly told from the vantage point of a young Black girl dealing with all manner of cultural and social issues surrounding hair. My favorite story was "My Little Sister Lena," which was a punch in the gut. Lena plays on an all- or mostly-white softball team and the other players are so obsessed with touching and comment on Lena's hair that she develops a neurotic habit of pulling out her own hair. A habit she seemingly is never able to break. Flowers does a great job of capturing the innocence, joy, uncertainty, and self-consciousness of youth while exploring larger social themes and family dynamics.
Loved this book overall. I saw myself in a lot of the characters and pretty much all of the stories. Tear jerker at times. There were some points where I didn’t know whose story was whose, if the stories were continuations of other characters stories or new characters. Also the cursive was a bit hard to read, but I pushed through. The artistry is simplistic but it makes it more provocative and unique in my opinion. This book is a reminder of how universally connected black women are through our hair. I’m glad this book exists

I wish I could've enjoyed this but I couldn't get past the beginning. The art was lacking but I could deal with that; however, the text was written in sloppy cursive that was bordering on illegible. I don't want to decipher the text, sorry.
A peep into the life of hair as a curly/nappy/frizzy child. There's a story about first time relaxer with an ending that is oh. so. true.

I liked it but would love for some stories to be further developed
