I read an ARC copy. It would be interesting to compare it to the final version.

Great graphic novel on black hair and what exactly it means to have black hair. The stories told by Flowers hit home for me with some of stories reminding of experiences I have had with my hair as a kid.

I didn't hate this one, but I also did not exactly enjoy it.

I did not enjoy the art style, I get that it is a personal preference, but I could not get behind the art style chosen for this graphic novel.
Beyond the art, I feel that the messages that were being portrayed would have been better portrayed in a written short story collection. I do not think the short graphic novels did the stories any justice.

I actually think this would have been a beautiful written short story collection because we could have gotten more background and nuance. Unfortunately, with this being a graphic novel, we miss a lot of the introspection and "explanation" for lack of a better word. This makes the actions and scenarios seem like common place and like they are okay. I do not believe that is what Flowers was trying to say, but the style chosen does not lend itself to be expanded upon.

I would give this authors work another read, but this one was not for me.

This is such a good collection of stories seemingly about hair, but really about so much more. They all have heart, humor, and depth. My heart just sunk at the last panel of the titular story. "If I just do this thing, I will fit in," never ends well but it seems like a rite of passage every kid has to go through (and their parents have to watch, knowing that- ugh!).

I couldn't really get behind the art in this book. The blurb said it featured stories that were about more than just hair, and maybe it's because I don't share the author's experiences, but some of the stories went right over my head as far as any deeper meaning.

I honestly just hate the art style and the chosen letter work. Cursive is hard for me to read in general, but I fel  the authors cursive was even harder to read. I also personally feel it was a bad font choice, it clashed with the heavy ink of the drawings. I really wanted to continue because I find the concept interesting and relatable as a black women. But I just can't get past the art and font style.

In this era I am trying to do better about dnfing instead of forcing myself to read things.
