I think I love Westerns now! It has never been a sub-genre I have been particularly interested in but this book has truly changed my perspective. What an exhilarating adventure! Listening to this on audio was the perfect way to consume this story. Donna Tartt’s performance was excellent and brought Mattie to life in such an authentic and believable way. She breathed life into this story and these characters.

A simple story, True Grit is made spectacular with precise language and believable character work. It was atmospheric without being overly flowery. The story spoke for itself. The characters felt real. I throughly enjoyed the experience of reading this!

All books start with 5 stars.
This one keeps all 5.
Excellent characters. Especially excellent heroine.
Exciting story. Interesting transitional point in history.

Rooster is terrible and wonderful. Just like most complex people. Maddie is fearless and judgmental and shrewd but still very much child. LaBeauf might be full of himself but he can back it up and shows up when it counts. Even the bag guys aren’t all bad.
The movies are great. The book is better.

Good quick book. Great western story. Loved the characters.

This was FANTASTIC! I loved that the main character was a little girl and that she was sure that she didn't have grit, but it turns out she does!

A revisit, this time with Donna Tartt's Holly Hunter-like (this is a compliment) audiobook performance, following time immersed with a literary analysis of Portis' novels that was published this year. Every phrase is perfect.

So good. Portis is the master of voice.
