Princess Anidori-Kiladra has been promised to the Prince of Bayern. As she makes the arduous 6-month journey, her lady in waiting Selia mutinies, attempts to kill Ani, and takes her place. Ani is able to escape and travels to the city where she works as a goose girl for the king. Ani works hard, makes friends, and discovers her power to harness wind. She will use all of the skills she has learned to confront Selia and the king.

A great fantasy-adventure retelling of the Goose Girl fairy tale.

After hearing about Shannon Hale time and time again from Enna I finally decided to pick up this book. I'm glad that I did too!

What a unique book. I could not and still cannot get over how unique the storyline was! With all of the books today being dystopian or paranormal/supernatural, this was a breath of fresh air for me. I will admit that there have been books about princess' going "undercover" or in disguise too, but Shannon Hale added so much of her own touch that it was like nothing I have ever read.Ani can talk/understand animals. Animals. Can anything be cooler?

Ani was such a great protagonist. She was smart, cunning, and even funny at times. The only issue I had was that while she was great, I didn't really connect with her. I loved reading about her struggles, but I didn't ever really feel bad for her or worry for her. Does that make sense?

Shannon Hale is a wonderful storyteller. I loved the way she paced all of the events in the book, there was never a dull moment for me. There were times when I could guess what was going to happen, but it was still an entertaining story.

Overall I enjoyed this book. It was such an entertaining book and I recommend it to everyone! It wasn't my favorite book, but it was one of those books that just made my day.

This was a re-re-re-reread for me. It is written so well despite being for 10 year olds ?????? Just need to check in every few years and make sure it’s as good as I remember. Good news!!! It is!!!!!!!!!! My childhood/current dream to make it into an animated movie is not seeming that unrealistic because Disney has the rights and is just SITTING ON THEM ??? Also the FRANCHISE POTENTIAL like it practically sells itself ????????

Also the romance is so cute and not toxic and the character development is really nice. Shannon Hale is bending over backwards to give us perfectly structured books for literal children and no one bats an eye

I love fairy tales. The Goose Girl is one that I, like the author, really enjoy reading. I wasn’t so sure this would be a good version: some of the novelizations of fairy tales have a lot left to be desired.

This book far exceeded my expectations. I stayed up late to finish it, even though I knew the general plot from the original tale. I liked that the author embellished and made a believable magic system for this fantasy. The audio version has a short interview with the author afterwards that made me appreciate this work even more.

I’ve read this book twice now and loved it each time. Shannon Hale has a beautiful way of writing simple, charming and enchanting stories. I was enamored but my first book of hers, “The Book of a Thousand Days” and enamored by this my Sri me book of hers. Her books have a uniquely readable quality and I look forward to reading the other retelling stories in this series. Also can we talk about how awesome the names in this novel are? My one gripe: much of the middle of the book was slow, painfully slow. I understand that it was a period of time for the main character to grow and learn and this issue of slowness was remedied by a few chase scenes and relationship developments but still I understand if people skip over a few chapters.
