A Darkness that Comes Before is an apt warning for new readers to this world.

Because dark it is.

It’s a brutal, miserable, misogynistic and abusive place. One of suffering and hopelessness.

Bakker’s prose and immersive writing style is amongst the best I’ve read. As torturous as this place is I couldn’t turn away or stop thinking about it.

All of which is pretty impressive considering this more or less is just a pretext to an upcoming war. There are very little battles although when you get them they are riveting.

Full of prophecy, religious faith and tribal pride. Looking forward to book 2 although I may take a small break to let the sun in for a minute. ;)
