Stoicism is one of the styles of philosophy that I've always found I best related to and could consistently walk away with something to ponder. This book especially made it digestible by breaking down into categories month to month and then single short half pages lessons each day, starting with a brief thought or quote and then a paragraph or to expanding on it. By breaking it down to such small portions it really allowed me to focus on the basic ideas day to day and not be overwhelmed with the overall philosophy, I could then build upon those ideas as other points of view were presented. This was a good book that excels at breaking up larger concepts into easy to understand ideas that relate to each other on a daily basis to grow your understanding.

I finally managed to read this book in a year as it was intended. The meditations are mostly useful and helped me be more reflective, however, I found some to be a little over simplified.

The basics:

You only control your own actions. Concern yourself with those, not of actions and events outside your control. Acceptance of this is not the same as passivity.

You improve the world by your actions, your example to others, and teaching others. You do not control how others interpret your actions, your example, or teaching.

You are biased and imperfect. Work daily to be less so. You will not fully succeed. You can only get closer.

On the largest scales, you don't matter, your works will not last, your efforts are ineffectual.

You create your own meaning, influenced by your peers, experience, and society. Choose helpful and useful meanings.

You control the meaning of events and actions for yourself. You can change the meaning of a sleight or suffering or pain. You can interpret obstacles as opportunities.

You will die. It will be longer or shorter than others' lives. But you each get the same thing - a life. It's better or worse based on the meaning you assign to it. It's easier when you live a good life for yourself and help others live good lives when they want to.

I've read this book almost daily for a year now and it has been a great addition to my day. I love the idea of a daily devotional that pulls from stoicism rather than a specific religious book. I love the philosophy behind the book and found many of the devotions to be thought provoking and a positive influence on my day.
