Books have always been an escape for me, much like the main character. It's rare that I find a book that both completely empties me out and yet fills me to overflowing at the same time. This is such a book.

From the words of Death, the narrator to the strength of each character - whether a strength that is on the side of good or bad - this book is the perfect snapshot of both the beauty and ugliness of humanity.

All I can write is "wow"! Once I got into this, I couldn't put it down. I love the friendships that the main character fostered throughout this story. This book was amazing. I can't believe it's considered a "teen" book though. I know the girl is a teen and a teenager can "get" the story, but I never would have guessed that it was in that genre!

One of the best things I've read in a long time. Zusak managed to find joy in a tale about one of the most depressing chapters in history and he did it with characters I cared about. I'm sorry this is a listed as a YA book in the U.S. because it deserves a bigger audience.

This is an excellent book, especially for anyone who values a story well told, a reminder about the history of both human kindness and human atrocities, and characters one can care about. Zusak has Death narrate the story, and it is very effective. He expounds on how words have affected and ruled us, and has a really good mastery of using language, himself.
The story seems to go slow at times, but no matter what, it is well worth the read!
