I went in assuming this book would focus on the author and his experience in nature, building a cabin. Instead the majority of the book is a treatise on economics, his thoughts on philanthropy, the Irish railroad workers, minimalism etc.
In one word bohohohohoring! There are some redeeming features, especially his philosophical musings on what is really necessary for happy human life, but the monotony of his endless descriptions drown them. Thoreau defends a simpler way of living (alone), but much of that preference seems to come from misanthropy more than "love of nature"
I like the concept of finding truth and simplicity, but I feel like Thoreau just rambles about every freaking gust of wind and rock in the pond. I don't have time for this! I know it's a classic, but I wouldn't read this unless you're doing research (please pick a different topic) or if you're forced to.

some of it had me like "yeah so true" like talking about companies just getting richer instead of actually making quality clothes
but most of it was either pretentious or just straight up boring lol

Beautiful albeit droll. I do not agree with all of his stances or thoughts, but every now and then a moment of brilliance presents itself. I took my time reading this, only doing so when outside, regardless of the weather. It gave me a great appreciation for nature through his loving and thorough descriptions of his surroundings. i may never recommend this book to anyone but i am not upset i read it.
