3.65 AVERAGE

I feel bad giving this book just 2 stars, because it wasn't a bad book, but I was really just "meh" about it. The tone - very snarky and sarcastic, like a lot of YA lit - was appropriate to the narrator, Loki, but I don't much enjoy that style. The characters? Well, you're seeing the story from the POV of the "villain" so you see all their bad qualities - the gods are vain, stupid, and selfish. Loki himself, while a sympathetic character for the most part, is so narcissistic and self-deluded that he's only partly likable. It's hard to read a whole book where you don't like any of the characters.

DID NOT FINISH

Author tried to defend another racist author and was outed as a racist themselves.

Well.

Going through the comments here I feel many have already eloquently expressed their misgivings and disappointment from this book, so I won't go into detail.

On the one hand it was easy to read and mostly amusing and I definitely can't say I had a lousy time reading it.
On the other hand the book disappointed me somewhat. I suppose I expected it to have more personality and spark, more emotions, and in general, that it would go deeper than it did.

I read Runemarks about 3 years ago and the only reason I haven't read Runelight yet is that life sort of got in the way. I find Runemarks much more...alive and spunky (inlc. the character of Loki) than this book ended up being. Which is interesting, considering Gospel should be spunk and spark galore, being told by the fiery Trickster himself.

But it's still an enjoyable book...just not as great as it could and should have been.

A pretty good book if you are into Norse mythology.

I'm glad I finally read this book. I would have enjoyed more had I read it before I read Neil Gaiman's Nordic Mythology. They are mostly the same in content and theme.
The main difference is the slightly sarcastic narrator in this one as opposed to the more poetic writing style of the Nordic Mythology.
I think I liked this one better than Nordic Mythology. I already have the next book ready and enjoy the fact that it has a sequel.

When it comes to this book, there is only one thing to say; It was gorgeous!

I might be a little biased here. I ADORE Loki. And this book really did justice to that character
