The way the second half of the book picks up is just *chefs kiss*. I want Wren to be mineee.

Although the story line is good, this time I predicted the ending. The story was very repetitive and reminded me of the relationship between Jude and Cardan. Which made it very slow in parts and the ending leaves so many questions to be answered!

that ending?!?!

cant believe i have to wait another year (at least) for the next book

3,4☆

I'm a massive folk of air fan and this book was right up my street. To the point I now own 3 copies in 3 different editions. There is something about Holly Black's books that just somehow give me comfy read whilst still keeping you in suspense

I loved the folk of the air trilogy a lot so was excited to get back into Elfhame and see the continuation of Oak’s story. And honestly, finished most of this in a day, the tension and pacing were what kept me barreling through. Much of what I loved from the original trilogy shines through once again, which was nice! The way that Holly Black writes the fae and their lore is so good, it’s so complex and alive, so many different species and creatures with so many cultures/politics existing in this space. Through Wren’s POV we get a better idea of life in one of the unseelie courts, which is a great contrast from the original story.

Suren as a character offers a really compelling character parallel and foil with Jude. Both are in their own ways outsiders to Faerieland by being raised in the mortal world and stolen back by their fae parents. They feel a pent up bitterness, rage, and distrust for everything around them, especially anyone that tries to get too close. Their paths differ because of their circumstances too so I think it was cool to see how the same character archetype could be written differently. Similar comparisons and contrasts could be made between Oak and Cardan and I really did like that Holly Black played with that in writing this sequel series.

I was worried in the beginning because of the time jump and Oak being such a child in the original trilogy that I wouldn’t be able to buy the romance, but man the tension was so well done. Holly Black is so good about creating eroticism through subtlety and intimacy and it gets me every time. The way it’s so clear how much Oak yearns for Suren (though she tries to convince us otherwise) even though we never get his inner thoughts, just his expressions and actions through Suren’s eyes…now that’s how you build chemistry. Especially loved all the scenes of them doing each other’s hair and how that intimacy really moved the relationship development. soooo good 😮‍💨

This is kinda spoiler-y from here on out! The plot itself and the ending is what kinda disappointed me with this book. It was a pretty simple journey from the beginning with them having to get to the Citadel to free Madoc/defeat Lady Nore, and the reasoning why didn’t really feel like it was important enough to me. I could also see the twist coming from miles away, so when Suren herself finds out, I just didn’t feel the betrayal she was feeling nor did I feel her rage with Oak was really justified. She was never forced into going with them after a certain event in the book and Oak had protected the secret with her safety and benefit in mind, and as the reader I couldn’t buy into the way she saw his intentions. I feel here that trying to make them parallels to Jude and Cardan actually backfires on Holly Black. Oak is clever but he does not have the cunning nor cruelty that infested Cardan, so this angle to their relationship doesn’t work for me. I think having such a big time jump with very little flashback scenes also don’t help convince me Oak is a trickster and committed a great betrayal towards Suren. I guess it might get more built upon in the next book, we will see! I think this book could’ve benefitted from being longer and going more into what had made Oak and Suren have complicated history before the main plot of the book takes place. The ending just really annoyed me honestly, and hope in the Prisoner’s Throne this part doesn’t get drawn out.

Overall though it was a really fun and quick read, I did like the new versions of Suren and Oak more than I thought I would and enjoyed the romance. Total lack of Judecardan in this book I felt scammed out of that and pray there’s lots of them in the 2nd book to finish out the duology 😭
