I really enjoyed this book, though it took me awhile to read it. It was interesting to see Oak and Suren all grown up after seeing pieces of their life through the series before. I really enjoyed reading more about Wren, seeing as how she was the gem of this book truly. A lot of the ending was predictable, though some of it managed to surprise me. I was surprised of the turn the author took with Oak, and I wasn’t sure of it at first, but found I really enjoyed this character and some of the other supporting ones were also fascinating. I am curious to see how this story will in with the second book.

Continuing after the rather satisfying and epic end of the original trilogy, I can say I was initially a bit conflicted to jump back into the world of the books. I held (and still hold) the original storyline close to my heart, and couldn't see myself thoroughly enjoying something that didn't really involve Jude and Cardan. But I'm glad to notice that my worries were for naught.
Wren as a protagonist is at least just as multifaceted and interesting as Jude, if even not more so. Her moral conflicts, insecurities and fear of trusting others and facing her traumas is a grueling feat to follow, and as she progresses through her story, I found myself getting more and more invested. The beginning of the book drags a bit in my opinion, even though the book itself is quite short. Once I got through the beginning (50-100ish pages), I was hooked. The ending twist left me SHOOK, screaming and pulling my hair over it, and I can't wait to see how it continues.
It's also fun seeing characters from the trilogy be mentioned in passing, as well as of course the fact that Oak is a major character in this book. He is just familiar enough to not need too many introductions, but unfamiliar enough where the reader has to discover him alongside Wren in the story.
Overall surpassed my expectations, as I often feel that a trilogy that has ended well shouldn't be expanded on as to not ruin the magic, but in this case it worked for me! I love the dark, emotional depth this book includes, and I cam't wait to get my hands on the next one ASAP.
