It wouldn't feel quite right to be rating this book in stars. It is a profound read, and I have no notes.

Very thought provoking reflection on feminism, breast cancer, and breast reconstruction/prosthetics. Lorde challenges the conventional way of thinking, and I’m amazed by her speaking about this 45 years ago

i don't even know if i have the proper words to express how meaningful this book is. it's a book i need to buy and a book i want to keep with me for the rest of my life, regardless of what life-threatening illnesses find their way to me. it's always difficult to actually sit with mortality, and since i still am so young i know that a lot of this hasn't hit me just yet...but i think reading it now and returning to it later in the future will be so important.

it's easy to live in fear and to let things like cancer dictate how you live, but i think more than anything this book strives to raise awareness while also reminding you that no matter what, you only get this one life and whatever time you get is a gift. but we should not stop at just living. we need to speak up as well.

i really cannot wait to pick up more of audre's works in the future. wow.

It feels almost disrespectful, as a white person, to "review" such an incredible gift that was so obviously written, first and foremost, for black survivors of breast cancer, but it also feels important to express my absolute gratitude, even in a small way, that this book exists. For a long time, I have put off reading The Cancer Journals for fear they would stir up my (often overwhelming) anxiety around the topic of cancer. In avoiding it, I did myself a great disservice. This work is, if anything, indescribably empowering and uplifting. It is also as relevant now, as we struggle as a society to contend with a crumbling, inequitable medical industrial system and Covid19--a mass disabling event that is leaving many feeling hopeless to contend with their own health struggles--as it was when it was written. Thank you, Audre Lorde.

This one hit a bit too close to home for me personally. An interesting perspective on the topic of femininity and breast cancer.
