"Titanic meets Event Horizon in this SF horror novel in which a woman and her crew board a decades-lost luxury cruiser and find the wreckage of a nightmare that hasn't yet ended." Interesting premise and chilling setting, however, I found our main character's internal dialogue annoying.
this was so fun!! i’m mad that i guessed the reveal early just because i’ve heard of that before, and i wish the ending wasn’t so… happy?

Creepy sci-fi/horror in space? Sign me up!
And yes, my favourite aspect of this book was the eerie atmosphere, because I was properly creeped out for the first half of the book. However, there's a shift in the plot around the halfway mark and I wasn't the biggest fan of it.
The eventual resolution to the 'mystery' we got wasn't satisfying imo, because we get some of the how's and why's, but it's very rushed and the motivation behind it all didn't make that much sense to me.
I guess this is just a perfect example of a fine book for me. It didn't do anything to annoy me, but it also didn't wow me at any point. So yeah, glad I read it, but I doubt I will remember much of it

I received an ARC copy of Dead Silence from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
Let me start of by saying, the audiobook for Dead Silence is stunning. This book is definitely more of a slow-burn mix of sci-fi/mystery/horror in all of the right ways. I was actually nauseous during certain parts, and the twist at the end caught me completely off-guard. The ending was beautiful, and They definitely weren't lying about this book being the vibes of Titanic and The Shining ... because what the fuck. The picture that this book painted in my head was so vivid, it was horrifying, but I loved it. For example,
“It sets off a strange sense of dislocation in my brain. Like it can’t be real. Or I’m not. But maybe that’s just because of the dead princess floating in the corner.”
Like... you're kidding me.
Stunning.

Claire and Cane ended up together, which is all I really cared about.“It sets off a strange sense of dislocation in my brain. Like it can’t be real. Or I’m not. But maybe that’s just because of the dead princess floating in the corner.”

Dead Silence was so much fun to read. It hit me right in the sweet spot: a mix of horror, sci-fi, and mystery. I went in knowing very little about it, and I don’t read a lot of sci-fi horror so when I stumble across one I’m always excited.
The Aurora is such a fantastic setting: a ghost spaceship with a previous life as a luxury cruiser. Claire is a great character: a giant mess, but capable and brave. The supporting characters were well-drawn enough to make me care about them and keep me unsure what they were up to.
I won’t say more because this is one best enjoyed without knowing too much. There’s some wonderfully grisly imagery, creepy moments, and a satisfying conclusion to the mystery of the Aurora.
Thank you to NetGalley and Tor Nightfire for providing me with this review copy.

[3.5 stars] i think this is genuinely the first time i am reading a book categorized as horror so this was a wild experience for myself, however i continue to love sci fi every time i read it. dead silence really and i mean //really// had me in the first half. i was hooked from the first chapter and thoroughly enjoyed the way s.a. barnes decided to tell the story aka as flashback chapters with interruptions from present time. this added an eerie feeling to the storytelling on top of the already established spookiness of the book. i think this is just because the characters in present time knew something was wrong and so these conversations were leading us further into the fray while uncovering further unnerving information. i did spend the first night after starting this book paranoid about what was in the dark so if that’s a factor you like to take into consideration, there you have it. i do wish the author had taken different directions with the story, which ultimately left me feeling unsatisfied with the ending. i didn’t like how some things were explained (or not) or left open for interpretation. i still thought it was a good story overall and i’m glad i decided to read it (thanks alex!). also the crumbs of romance scattered throughout the story were literally for me. y’all know how to get my attention and it’s via a hot space medic.
